Last year, Serena wrote a couple of blogs about the use of Tu and Lei (click on text to open links): Part 1, Part 2

Those blogs explained that in Italian we have two main forms of addressing people: the informal tu and the formal lei. We normally use tu with family, friends, and children. Lei is used with people we don’t know, and professionals, such as doctors, lawyers, the police etc. This time round I’m going to give you a couple of everyday examples which demonstrate the grammatical and structural differences between the two forms. In the following examples the informal is highlighted in red and the formal in blue.

Let’s begin with a simple e-mail:

Informal:

Ciao Luca, come stai? È da un po’ di tempo che non ti sento. Hai mai finito quel corso di inglese? Mi farebbe tanto piacere rivederti quest’altra settimana quando vengo giù a Sarzana. Pensi che possa venire a trovarti così che possiamo praticare assieme l’inglese? Scommetto che oramai te la cavi bene, vero?

Formal:

Salve Sig. Rossi, come sta? È da un po’ di tempo che non la sento. Ha mai finito quel corso di inglese? Mi farebbe tanto piacere rivederla quest’altra settimana quando vengo giù a Sarzana. Pensa che possa venire a trovarla così che possiamo praticare assieme l’inglese? Scommetto che oramai se la cava bene, vero?

Now a phone call:

Informal:

Ciao bella, come va? … io male, ho ancora quel raffreddore … sì, grazie. Senti cara, mi faresti un piacere? Puoi fare un salto in farmacia a prendermi le pastiglie per la tosse? … ah hai l’appuntamento alle dieci … cosa hai detto? ti sento male … oh, va bene, ho capito, ci vediamo più tardi allora .. sì sì stai tranquilla, non ti preoccupare non mi alzo per adesso … o.k. ciao ciao … sì grazie, ciao bella.

Formal:

Buongiorno Signora Rosanna, come sta? … io male, ho ancora quel raffreddore … sì, grazie. Senta, mi potrebbe fare un piacere per favore? Potrebbe fare un salto in farmacia a prendermi le pastiglie per la tosse? … ah ha l’appuntamento alle dieci … cosa ha detto scusi? la sento male … oh, va bene, ho capito, ci vediamo più tardi allora .. sì sì stia tranquilla, non si preoccupi non mi alzo per adesso … o.k. salve … sì grazie, salve signora.

You’ll notice that, apart from the direct grammatical changes associated with the informal and formal modes, the tone of the language has also been modified to reflect a more polite attitude in the formal versions. For example, in the phone conversation ‘come va’ (how’s it going) has been substituted by ‘come sta?’ (how are you?), and ‘mi faresti un piacere?’ (would you do me a favour?) becomes ‘mi potrebbe fare un piacere per favore?’ (could you do me a favour please?).
