Two for the price of one today … a short conversational blog which also doubles as a mini book review!

Author Niccolò Ammaniti was born in Rome in 1966. He has written three novels and a collection of short stories. He won the prestigious Italian Viareggio-Repaci Prize for Fiction with his bestselling novel Io Non Ho Paura (I’m Not Scared), which has been translated into thirty-five languages, and made into a wonderful film that I highly recommend you see (available with English subtitles). Serena: “Che libro stai leggendo?”

Geoff: “Sto leggendo ‘Fango’ di Niccolò Ammaniti, quello che mi hai passato tu l’altro giorno”

I’m reading Fango by Niccolò Ammaniti, the one you passed on to me the other day

Serena: “Ah, sì, quello! allora … come lo trovi?”

Ah yes, that one! so … what do you think of it?

Geoff: “Un po’ strano … e abbastanza difficile, per me”

A bit strange … and quite difficult, for me

Serena: “Sì, te l’avevo detto che sarebbe stato difficile, ma secondo me ne vale la pena … ma strano in che senso?”

Yes, I told you that it would be difficult, but I think it’s worth it … but strange in what way?

Geoff: “Nel senso che è uno strano miscuglio di umorismo e macabro. Per esempio, ti ricordi la prima storia, che s’intitola ‘L’ultimo capodanno dell’umanità’? Quella comincia in maniera leggera, scherzosa, e poi … pian piano diventa sempre più surreale e violenta, infatti mi ricorda qualche sketch di Monty Python. Sì, è una specie di Monty Python all’italiana”

In that it’s a strange mixture of humour and macabre. For example, you remember the first story that’s called ‘The Last New year’s Eve of Humanity’? It begins lightly, jokingly, and then gets gradually more surreal and violent, in fact it reminds me of some of the Monty Python sketches. Yes, it’s a kind of Italian Monty Python.

Serena: “Sì, è vero! proprio per questo mi è piaciuto, perché è così surreale … ma allo stesso tempo i personaggi sono così ben descritti, che sembra di vederli uno per uno”

Yes, it’s true! that’s exactly why I liked it, because it’s so surreal … but at the same time the characters are so well described, you can clearly visualise each one

Geoff: “Esatto! però la seconda storia non mi è piaciuta, perché era impietosamente violenta, senza l’umorismo della prima”

Exactly! however, I didn’t like the second story because it’s pitilessly violent, without the humour of the first one

Serena: “No, neanche a me è piaciuta, è scioccante …  e la terza?”

No, I didn’t like it either, it’s shocking … and the third?

Geoff: “La terza mi è, fra virgolette, piaciuta … cioè è molto ben scritta, ti prende, però provoca un senso di disagio. E poi la quarta storia non l’ho ancora letta”

I liked, in inverted commas, the third one … that is, it’s really well written, it grips you, but it makes you feel uneasy. And as for the fourth … I haven’t read it yet

Serena: “Qual è la quarta? (sfoglia il libro) Ah, ‘Lo Zoologo’, anche quella è bella, assurda e …”

Which one is the fourth? (thumbs through book) Ah, The Zoologist, that one’s great, absurd and …

Geoff: “Va bene, basta! Non mi svelare troppo!”

Okay, that’s enough! don’t reveal too much!

Serena: “Comunque, dal punto vista di uno che sta imparando l’italiano, gli consiglieresti questo libro?”

But from the point of view of someone who’s learning Italian, would you recommend this book to them?

Geoff: “Solo se hanno una buona conoscenza dell’italiano … non è certo per i principianti”

Only if they have a good understanding of Italian … it’s certainly not for beginners
