For today’s lesson, I thought I would go over this conversational lesson on getting to know someone you just met. When you meet someone for the first time, if you don’t know anything about him/her, how do you normally start the conversation?

I just had a chance to meet this lovely lady who is very lively and energetic. She is my instructor for one of my favorite fitness classes at the local gym. It is always exciting to meet new friend and get to know the person at personal level. Below is the way how our conversation went.

はじめまして。(初めまして)

 

I’m Keiko.

Keiko desu.

けいこ　です。

 

I see you often in my class recently.

Saiki yoku kurasu ni omieni natte masune.

さいきん　よく  くらすに　おみえに　なってますね。

（最近　よく　クラスに　おみえに　なってますね。）

 

Today’s class was amazing. I loved it.

Kyo no kurasu sugoku yokatta desu. Tottemo kini iri mashita.

きょうの　クラス　すごく　よかったです。とても　きにいりました。

（今日の　クラス　凄く　よかったです。とても　気に入りました。）

 

 

How long have you been teaching this class?

Do re kurai kono kurasu oshiete irassharun desuka?

どれくらい　この　くらす　おしえて　いらっしゃるん　ですか？

（どれくらい　この　クラス　教えて　いらっしゃるん　ですか？）

 

 

I have been teaching this class for the last ５ years.

Kono kurasu wa gonen oshiete imasu.

この　くらすは　ごねん　おしえています。

（この　クラスは　五年　教えています。）

 

 

Have you been in U.S. for a while?

America niwa mou nagai aida omieni narun desuka?

あめりかには　もう　ながいあいだ　おみえに　なるん　ですか？

アメリカには　もう　長い間　おみえになるん　ですか？

 

 

I have been here about 15 years now.

Mou jyu-go nen hodo imasune.

もう　じゅうごねん　ほど　いますね。

（もう　１５年　程　いますね。）

 

 

I have been here about 20 years now.

Watashi wa ni-jyunen kurai imasu.

わたしは，　にじゅうねん　くらい　います。

（私は　２０年　くらい　います。）

 

 

I look forward to coming to your class next week.

Mata tsugino kurasu ni kuruno tanoshi mini shitemasu.

また，らいしゅう　クラスに　くるのを　たのしみに　しています。

(また　来週　クラスに　来るのを　楽しみに　してます。)

My advice is to start your conversation with something simple and expand your conversation into something you both have in common. That is the approach I normally take to start any conversation with a new friend. Once you find the common ground, the rest of the conversation flows easily~. 🙂
