How to say “Want to” in Korean in casual way? Posted by on Mar 23, 2016 in Uncategorized

I believe many students who have learned Korean learned “Want to” as “고 싶다/go ship da”. However, there is another way to say it in casual situation. The grammar point is “V.S. + ㄹ/을 + 래(요).  This is very common way to say, so you can hear a lot from your Korean friend if you have one. For instance, when you and your Korean friend go to eat lunch, he or she will ask you “햄버거 먹을래?/ Do you want to eat hamburger?” If he or she is not your friend, you want to be polite and need to add 요 “먹을래요?” Just remember ㄹ is right after vowel ending and 을 is right after consonant ending. See the examples below how to conjugate to verbs.

To eat 먹다

먹다 + 을래요 = 먹을래요.

I want to eat kimchi. 김치를 먹을래요.

To watch 보다

보다 + ㄹ래요 = 볼래요.

I want to watch the Terminator. 터미네이터 볼래요.

To go 가다

가다 + ㄹ래요 = 갈래요

I want to go home. 집에 갈래요.

**To play 놀다 (Irregular)

놀다 + 래요 = 놀래요.

Do you want to come to our house tomorrow and play? 내일 우리 집에 와서 놀래요?
