This year, the Korean lunar New Year took place on February 3rd. The Korean lunar New Year is different from the New Year that took place on January 1st. The New Year on January 1st is the New Year based on the solar calendar. This is traditionally an exciting day for children because this is the day where they will receive money called ‘sebe don’ (새배돈). In order to receive the money, children will perform a bow called ‘sebe jul’ (새배절). While they are performing this bow, they will utter the phrase ‘sehe bok mani baduseyo’ (새해 복 많이 받으세요). If you watched the video, you saw that both children were wearing traditional Korean clothes called hanbok (한복).
The New Year is called sul nal (설날). Sul nal is a day where Korean people eat a rice cake soup called ddok guk (떡국). Here is a video showing you how to make it:
