Scary Korean Movies Posted by Ginny on Oct 28, 2010 in Culture
Are you wondering what horror/suspense/thriller Korean movies are out there? Here are some old movies that you may not have known about :
Phone (폰) is a 2002 movie starring Korean actress Ha Ji Won (하지원). Ha Ji Won plays a journalist in possession of a cell phone. Not to give the story away, but it’s about a woman who discovers her husband’s mistress and the revenge that she exacts on the mistress. I would say that this one of the better scary movies. The movie’s plot unfolds little by little, with very intense moments.
Bunshinsaba (분신사바) is a 2004 movie about bullies and the bullied. A couple of bullied girls place a curse upon some bullies. The next day at school, the bullies die one by one. It turns out that one of the bullied girls is possessed by a vengeful spirit and that she may be carrying out the murders. The movie deals with the question of what it means to be a bully and where we must draw the line to enact justice.
Say Yes (세이 예스) is a 2001 Korean film about a married couple and a sadistic villain. The movie starts out with the couple extending an invitation to a hitchhiker. The hitchhiker later turns out to be a psychopath. The hitchhiker gives an ultimatum to the husband. The husband must decide to give himself up to be tortured or his wife will die. I won’t tell you how the movie ends, but it’s worth watching.
R-Point (알 포인트) is a 2004 film detailing the death of Korean soldiers in the Vietnam War. To create hype for this movie, there was an online viral campaign. False documents were posted online that described the ghosts of dead soldiers who had passed away. The movie won an award in South Korea for having the best sound effects.
Cello (첼로) is a 2005 film about a friend’s jealousy and delusion. I don’t want to give the ending away, but towards the end of the movie, the audience is forced to decide whether the protagonist is imagining things or whether there really is a ghost haunting her. In other words, is the protagonist’s jealousy driving her to madness or is it the influence of the ghost?

Chris:
I’ve watched 2 of the movies listed here–Phone and Cello. i really liked Phone, i didn’t find it scary though however i liked the story a lot. Cello on the other hand…i found it a bit scarier (but still not wet-my-pants-scary) but i didn’t like the story. It was quite confusing and nothing really original. “Say Yes” looks quite interesting. I plan to watch it if i can find it. More power to your blog!
