Spartacus Posted by on Mar 9, 2010 in Uncategorized

There’s a drama series called Spartacus: Blood and Sand that’s supposed to depict the real-life slave, Spartacus. Here’s a trailer of the show:

Another famous classic is the 1960 version of Spartacus that stars Kirk Douglas. You can probably find that at your local rental video store.

In case you haven’t seen the movie, I’ll try not to give anything away, but let me tell you a little bit about Spartacus. Spartacus was a slave forced to become a gladiator. In 73 BC, Spartacus led a slave revolt into Rome. I won’t tell you any further details, but it’s probably obvious as to what happens to the rebellion. To this day, historians can only speculate about Spartacus’s motives to lead the rebellion. Did he have the noble amibition to abolish slavery? Or was he just so angry that he wanted revenge upon Rome? The image of Spartacus still transcends time. It’s been said that famous people like Karl Marx and Che Guevara listed Spartacus as one of their heroes.

So what do you think? Is he the hero of the masses or just another villain? Maybe something in between?
