I går (yesterday) was farsdagen (Father´s Day) here in the U.S. In Norway farsdagen is celebrated on the second søndag in november. As in the U.S. and many other countries in the world, farsdagen is day for å ære fedre (to honor fathers). Farsdagen was first observed in the early 20th century in the U.S. as a result of a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Sonora´s father was a veteran of borgerkrigen (the civil war) and was left to parent Sonora and her 5 søsken (siblings) after their mor (mother) died during fødselen (the birth) of their 6th barn (child). As morsdagen (Mother´s Day) had already been established as a helligdag to celebrate mødre (mothers), it seemed naturlig (natural) to dedicate a day in observance of fedre.
In Norway er det tradisjon (it is tradition) to ære fedre with frokost på senga (breakfast in bed), et kort (a card), en gave (a present), or helt enkelt (quite simply) ved å gratulere med farsdagen (with a Father´s Day congratulation).
I found a list of suggested gavetips (gift tips) for farsdagen that included items I have either given pappa or thought about giving pappa, such as sokker (socks), slips (tie), gavekort (gift card), universiell fjernkontroll (universal remote control), Leatherman multiverktøy (multi-tool), and bøker (books). This year I got my dad a set of anchor cuff links. Han liker å seile (He likes to sail).
Fedre are great, aren´t they? What do you like to do with faren din (your father)?
Min favoritt ting å gjøre med pappa er å gå på sykkeltur. My favorite thing to do with dad is going on biking trips.
And some useful phrases that could come in handy på farsdagen….
Faren min har gjort meg interessert i…… My father has interested me in….
Jeg er takknemlig for pappa fordi…. I am thankful for dad because….
Jeg husker ________ om pappa fra bardommen min……. I remember_______ about dad from my childhood.
Pappa og jeg skal _______ på farsdagen…….. Dad and I are going to ______ on
Father´s Day.
Gratulerer til alle fedre! Congratulations to all dads!!
