Picking berries in Norway Posted by kari on Aug 10, 2010 in Nature
Oh how I love to plukke bær (pick berries). Believe it or not, I refused to eat frukt (fruit) up until college. It was something about the texture that I absolutely despised. To this day, I will never understand how I went 18 years without liking frukt. I drank fruktjus (fruit juice), but that´s certainly not the same as ekte frukt (real fruit). In fact, isn´t it recommended now by doctors to take it easy on jus because there is so much sukker (sugar) in it?
It´s a good thing I decided to force myself to eat frukt once I got to college. I´m sure I became sunnere (healthier) after the first doses of vitamin A, B, and C. I like almost all kinds of frukt. Her finner du en liste over flere typer frukt (Here you´ll find a list of several types of fruit):
banan-banana (that one was easy)
appelsin-orange (not so easy, doesn´t it seem like it should be ´apple´?
eple-eple
ananas-pineapple
druer-grapes
fersken-peach
vannmelon-watermelon
and my personal favorites-bær:
bringebær-raspberries
jordbær-strawberries
blåbær-blueberries
tyttebær-lingonberries
moltebær-cloudberries
kirsebær-cherries
kråkebær-crowberries
It would not be surprising if you have not heard of kråkebær or moltebær before-I sure hadn´t until I lived in Norway for the first time. These two types of bær are only found in the far north. Moltebær for the most part are only found north of the arctic circle and kråkebær are found in the far north, as well as the far south of South America. I have not tried kråkebær yet, but I saw them the other day and they look kind of like blåbær except they are much darker, almost black, but roughly the same size. Moltebær, on the other hand, resemble bringebær, except they are typically larger, are more orange-pink in color, and taste slightly like an eple.
I was at the foot of a fjell (mountain) yesterday and was on a mission to plukke blåbær. It was very unsuccessful. Due to the cold and wet summer here in northern Norway, bær have not become modne (ripe) yet. Some of the blåbær that I picked looked alright, but they were not søt (sweet) at all-bummer.
I remember when I lived in Oslo 4 years ago, I housesat for a friend about an hour outside of Oslo in the mountains and I found gobs and gobs of ville jordbær (wild strawberries). They are tiny and bright red and deilig (delicious)!
Hvilket bær er ditt favoritt? (Which berry is your favorite?)

“anana” should of course read “ananas”.
I went blueberry picking on friday, using the special blueberry picking devices (I’m not sure if you’ve seen them, but they make picking much more efficient). We had to go quite far in order to find bushes which weren’t already picked clean from the previous weeks.
Like you mention, the taste of these were quite bitter, but we’re making jam out of them so no harm done.
Molta are also known as knotberries or averin in English, and can be found in Ireland, Northern Britain, large parts of Canada, and even as far south as Minnesota in the States.

Og mitt favoritt bær er, som du nevnte, ville jordbær. Men man sier ofte markjordbær 🙂
