Do you often dream of looking onto a beautiful, blossoming meadow in your back garden? Or how about a wild see of poppies in front of your office in the city? I definitely like it better than carefully design flowerbed.

Well, those dreams are slowly turning into reality in some of the Polish cities, thanks to the companies like Łąki Kwietne (based outside of Warsaw)!

Shunning more traditional green features such as cultivated flowerbeds and lawns, more and more cities such as Warsaw and Katowice are looking to introduce wildflower meadows (łąki dzikich kwiatów) to their urban tissue.

Retailing ready-to-sow, ecologically-minded seed sets to all those that wish to introduce a touch of untamed nature to their everyday life, the company Łąki Kwietne was founded by Karol Podyma and has combined his eye for business with his concern for the environment. He comes from a family of botanists and is all about protecting biodiversity and supporting Polish nature. His business is his passion.

The eco-entrepreneur initially established a foundation educating and promoting the value of “urban meadows”. Over time, however, the project was monetized and successfully developed into an amazing business. These days companies like Łąki Kwietne emerge all over the world! The question “why” can be easily answered!

Largely inspired by the growing need to protect pollinators (zapylacze) such as bees (pszczoły), the urban meadows that have subsequently sprung up around the world have also proved effective in countering smog (przeciwdziałanie smogowi) and retaining the water levels found in soil (utrzymanie poziomu wody w glebie). Furthermore, with so little upkeep required, their money-saving qualities are noticed by a lot of people.

Maintaining lawns and flowerbeds in the city and their their aesthetic appearance demands a lot of work as well as expenditure on chemicals, fuel and water (wydatki na chemikalia, paliwo i wodę). In addition, the maintenance of such lawns can often be associated with the use of garden chemicals which can be harmful to animals and people.

According to ecologists, the benefits of sowing wildflower meadows instead are huge! For farmers they have the potential to provide protection for crops, whilst beekeepers have noted the positive effect they have had in providing a more varied and evenly distributed food base for their bees. Cities are benefited with meadows filtering pollutants from the air, suppressing traffic noise and preventing the formation of urban heat islands.

These amazing wildflower meadows look beautiful, require almost no watering, no moving and with many of these flowers viewed or classified as “natural weeds” there is no need to special treatment. How amazing, right?
