Raul Seixas (1945-1989) was one of Brazil’s biggest rock stars and is considered one of the pioneers of Brazilian rock. Born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, he first entered the music scene with the band Os Panteras in the 1960s. His recording career started to take off in 1970, in Rio de Janeiro. But he was arrested and tortured by the military regime in the early 1970s and was briefly exiled in the United States. Raul was a colorful character; he was married five times and worked for a time with famous writer Paulo Coelho. After returning from abroad, Raul continued a successful singing career in Brazil, but died at age 44 of complications with diabetes.

Now, over 20 years after his death, filmmakers decided to make a documentary about his life. The movie Raul: O Início, o Fim, e O Meio came out in Brazil in March, and will screen in New York this Saturday.
