How to pronounce the ending “-em” in Portuguese Posted by on Jun 1, 2012 in Uncategorized

Olá! Tudo bem?

Here’s a short video I made to teach you (if you don’t know already!) how to pronounce the ending -em in Portuguese! The words I use in the video are:

alguém – someone
ninguém – no one
também – too, also
amém – amen
nem – either, not either
ele vem – he comes
trem – train
neném – little baby

Se cuida e tenha um ótimo fim de semana!

The “trick” for us (Americans) with “em” is simply this: don’t put your lips together! Think of it as much more like “en” than “em”.
Love the blog and the videos.

obrigado Adir! é muito difícil pra mim. este vídeo ajuda.

  3. Carlos Deegan:

Adir, You must emphasize nasalization in using -em words. Most non-Portuguese speakers find this difficult because it sounds whiney. However, when one does this the tongue does not touch the palate and the lips do not close. Most nonspeakers close their lips and this really ruins the effect.
