Olá, pessoal! Tudo bem com vocês?

The verb discutir is widely used in Portuguese and has two main translations:

1. to argue

– Eles estavam discutindo na hora que eu cheguei. [They were arguing when I arrived.]

– Sobre o quê eles estão discutindo? [What are they arguing about?]

– Não adianta discutir com ela porque é muito teimosa. [It’s no use arguing with her because she’s really stubborn.]

2. to discuss

– Por que não nos encontramos amanhã para discutir o novo projeto? [Why don’t we meet tomorrow to discuss the new project?]

– Temos que discutir como as coisas vão ser feitas com a nova diretoria. [We have to discuss how things will be done with the new board of directors.]

– Antes de assinar o contrato teremos que discutir os termos. [Before signing the contract we will have to discuss the terms.]

We also have the following words that come from “discutir”:

(a) discussão – discussion; argument
discutível – discussable, arguable
indiscutível – unarguable, unquestionable
(o) discutidor – discusser, arguer
