After a period of tumultuous elections, Brazil has finally chosen its 38th president, the far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro. After defeating his opponent Fernando Haddad on the polls on Sunday, Bolsonaro read a speech that set the tone for his next fours years in office. Today’s post will feature a segment of his official statement, followed by a translation in English. Next week’s post will also include the defeated candidate speech on the same day so readers can compare their approaches.

Parte um: Nunca estive sozinho. Sempre senti a presença de Deus e a força do povo brasileiro. Orações de homens, mulheres, crianças, famílias inteiras que, diante da ameaça de seguirmos por um caminho que não é o que os brasileiros desejam e merecem, colocaram o Brasil, nosso amado Brasil, acima de tudo. Faço de vocês minhas testemunhas de que esse governo será um defensor da Constituição, da democracia e da liberdade. Isso é uma promessa não de um partido. Não é a palavra vã de um homem. É um juramento a Deus. A verdade vai libertar este grande país, e a liberdade vai nos transformar em uma grande nação. A verdade foi o farol que nos guiou até aqui e que vai seguir iluminando o nosso caminho.O que ocorreu hoje nas urnas não foi a vitória de um partido, mas a celebração de um país pela liberdade.

Part 1: I’ve never been alone. I have always felt the presence of God and the strength of the Brazilian people. Prayers from men, women, children, entire families who, faced with the threat of following a path that is not what Brazilians want and deserve, place Brazil, our beloved Brazil, above all else. I make you my witnesses that this government will be a defender of the Constitution, democracy and freedom. That’s a promise not from a party. It is not the empty word of a man. It’s an oath to God. The truth will set this great country free, and freedom will turn us into a great nation. The truth was the beacon that guided us here and that will continue to light our way. What happened today at the polls was not the victory of a party, but the celebration of a country for freedom.

Parte dois: O compromisso que assumimos com os brasileiros foi de fazer um governo decente, comprometido exclusivamente com o país e com o nosso povo –e eu garanto que assim será. Nosso governo será formado por pessoas que tenham o mesmo propósito de cada um que me ouve neste momento: o propósito de transformar o nosso Brasil em uma grande, livre e próspera nação. Podem ter certeza de que nós trabalharemos dia e noite para isso. Liberdade é um princípio fundamental: liberdade de ir e vir, de andar nas ruas, em todos os lugares deste país, liberdade de empreender, liberdade política e religiosa, liberdade de informar e ter opinião. Liberdade de fazer escolhas e ser respeitado por elas.Este é um país de todos nós, brasileiros natos ou de coração. Um Brasil de diversas opiniões, cores e orientações. Como defensor da liberdade, vou guiar um governo que defenda e proteja os direitos do cidadão que cumpre seus deveres e respeita as leis; elas são para todos. Porque assim será o nosso governo; constitucional e democrático.

Part 2: The commitment we made with the Brazilians was to make a decent government, committed exclusively to the country and our people – and I guarantee that it will be so.Our government will be formed by people who have the same purpose of each one who hears me at this moment: the purpose of transforming our Brazil into a great, free and prosperous nation. You can be sure that we will work day and night for this. Freedom is a fundamental principle: freedom to come and go, to walk the streets, everywhere in this country, freedom to do business, political and religious freedom, freedom to inform and have an opinion. Freedom to make choices and be respected by them. This is a country of us all, native or not. A Brazil with diverse opinions, colors and guidelines. As a defender of freedom, I will guide a government that upholds and protects the rights of citizens who do their duties and respect the laws; they are for everyone. For so will be our government; constitutional and democratic.
