Oi! I just learn this beautiful language for fun, but I’m sure that I’ll go to Brazil, and I’ll make some friends in this country.
Mark:
I like to learn Portuguese because I like languages in general and in particular
because Portuguese (or better Brazilian) has a wonderful music in its sound

Juliana:
I’m learning Portuguese for fun, because I have friends in Brazil, I travel to Brazil a lot and I would like to work in Brazil. So I have a lot of reasons to learn Portuguese. Oh, and the number reason why I’m learning Portuguese is:
Eu simplemente amo de lingua.

John Napper:
Why do I want to learn Portuguese?
Simple, I want to retire to Rio de Janeiro.
damir:
I used to date girl from Brasil a long time ago,
all that is left from all that is nice sound of portuguese. Ten years has passed since then,I’m still active portuguese learner and love the language.
David C. Brewster:
For me, it is pleasure.
Using the photo website flickr has introduced me to many new friends in Brazil, and I wanted to be able to say more than “linda foto” about their pictures.
Now I would love to visit them in person. 🙂
Also, last year my wife’s sister and family announced that they will be serving as missionaries in Portugal.
I know that theirs will be a different Portuguese, but similar enough, yes?
Barbara Klie:
I have a sister who has lived in Brasil since the early 80’s. I’ve been down 4 times. Each time I work on learning Portuguese. Unfortunately my sister and I always fall back on English. I am totally lost in groups of Portuguese speakers. I learn most from one to one encounters, ideally with a person who does not speak much English so I am forced to speak and listen to Portuguese. Understanding spoken Portuguese is by far the most difficult for me. E.g., I do not understand most of what is said in the videos included in the blog. It’s frustrating. If anyone has hints of how I can improve my receptive understanding, I would love to hear them.

I learn it because I love it and for my scientific work
Sophia:
Well since I’m a native English speaker, most of my difficulties lie in pronunciation. I’ve already learned a second language, and a third… so studying grammar and so vocabulary isn’t so difficult. (also, I already know that doing word-for-word translations don’t always result in a sentence of the same meaning) I know English, French, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese.. But none of those language require use of nasalized vowels! I find difficulty in pronouncing certain Portuguese words with “r” and the nasalized vowels. Tips on phonetics would be greatly helpful, but I guess the best is just to practice speaking with a native speaker.
Sophia:
eeep, i just realized i posted my reply to the wrong post. but i just love learning languages in general. i’m at the point in my french studies that i can no longer progress, only expand my vocabulary, so i felt ready to start a new one. and portuguese is just another language i admire! i’m a lover of languages. =) aaaand i want to be a polyglot.
Christopher:
I started learning Portuguese after completing most of my required studies for my chosen undergraduate degree. My advisor told me I should learn German and go to study classical music in Europe.
I told him I loved the idea, but with one minor change… I would plan to learn Portuguese and go study samba in Rio de Janeiro. After sticking to my plan, I couldn’t be happier having learned a ton of Portuguese.
Now I live in Cambridge, MA, and hear Portuguese on a daily basis. It’s so fun to feel connected to the culture. Also, my wife speaks Portuguese (she studies it too), so we can gossip about people in public without them knowing. And we also get to use the Portuguese diminutive for any words we want, Portuguese or English 🙂
Love the blog Rachel, keep it up (and welcome home!)

Steven:
I learn for pleasure. I first started because I enjoyed Brazilian films, and wanted to watch them without having to concentrate so much on the subtitles, and also I planned to travel to Brazil. Once I began, though, I really enjoyed the language, especially the way it sounds. I also have become fascinated with the music and other aspects of Brazil. P.S. I did finally make it to Brazil last year and was very glad I had learned some Portuguese first!
Nika:
I learn Portuguese for the love of Brazil. My best friend is Brazilian and made me love everything Brazilian. Right now.. i’m completely conversational. I could pass off as Brazilian… although i have like.. 3 different accents. lol. (carioca.. mineiro..paulista). I love portuguese because its fun… and makes you stand out (especially when people learn that you taught YOURSELF that langugage) 🙂
Arnold Cochran:
I love Brazil since I was just a kid. First I fall in love with the music, then with the culture, then with the lindas women and then with the language. I am from Puerto Rico and I do not find anyone who speak this beatiful language here. I learn from a curse and I do underestand the language and I can speak ok, but I need to talk with someone to improve it. portuguese is beatiful and I will keep learning from now on.
Patricia:

I never went to US or Uk, but next year I will go and I need to improve my english. If you want to talk with me, write me or call me: skype- vaniapalmeira.
Duane:
Hey Vania,
We are in similar situation. I’ve been to Rio last year for Carnaval and plan on going back in the near future. Email me at mstarks3atexcite.com and we’ll help each other out.
Vânia:
Hi Duane,
I Think you don’t gave your email correctly. Please, write me again or call me skype, ok?
Vânia:
Duane, I wrote don’t gave, I want to write “didn’t give” Right?, ok?
Duane:
Hi Vania,
Yes that is correct. “didn’t give” is the right way.
I gave you the email address correctly however I see what the mix up is. You have to replace the “at” in “mstarks3atexcite.com” with the @ symbol. I wrote it like that on purpose so that a real person types in email address instead some program finding it and using the address to send junk email.
I actually don’t have skype so for now email would be the best way to get in touch with me.Talk to you soon.
