Olá pessoal, tudo joia?

One of our readers asked us to post about the verb MEXER, so this week we will take a look at some meanings as well as expressions with this verb.

Mexer can be a hard verb to understand, since it has many meanings and are used in different ways and contexts. It would not be easy to try to memorise all the meanings, so I suggest you use it in a different context every week and stay tuned so you can hear it in conversation.

 

Meanings

1. To stir

• Você pode mexer meu café, por favor? – Can you stir my coffee, please?

 

 

• Use a colher de pau para mexer o feijão. – Use a wooden spoon to stir the beans.

 

2. To move

• Mexa a televisão para o lado de cá? – Move the TV this way.
• Não mexa no abajur, por favor. – Do not move the lamp, please.

 

3. To wiggle

• O cão mexe o rabo quando ele me vê. – The dog wiggles his tale when he sees me.

 

4. To disturb

• Não mexa com os pacientes quando eles estiverem dormindo – do not disturb the patients when they are asleep.

 

5. To commit

• Ele vai precisar se mexer para conseguir o emprego – he will have to commit to get the job.

 

6. To touch, go through

• Gustavo mexeu nas minhas coisas, está uma bagunça agora! – Gustavo went through my things, it’s all messy now!
• A ladrão mexeu na bolsa da moça, mas não achou nada de valor. – The thief went through the lady’s bag, but he didn’t find anything valuable.

 

7. To change, cheat

• Tenho certeza que ele mexeu no resultado do jogo. – I am sure he changed the game results.

 

8. To tease

• Meus colegas mexem comigo na escola todos os dias. – My classmates tease me everyday in school.

 

9. To work, to use

• Não sei mexer com Outlook, me ensina? – I don’t know how to use Outlook, can you teach me?
• Ele mexe com tradução de documentos. – He works translating documents.

 

10. To deal or use drugs

• Ele mexe com drogas. – He uses drugs.

 

11. To have an emotional impact on

• Esse filme mexeu muito comigo – this film has had a big impact on me.

 

12. To move, to dance

• Para dançar samba você precisa se mexer. – For you to dance Samba you have to move.

 

 

Expressions:

1. Mexer em casa de marimbondos – it translates as to poke a wasp’s nest. It is used in a situation where it is dangerous to provoke something or something.

• Discordar do nosso chefe é mexer em casa de marimbondo. – Disagreeing with our boss is dangerous.

 

2. Mexer os pauzinhos – it translates as to move the little sticks, and it means to pull some strings

• Meu avô teve que mexer os pauzinhos para eu conseguir aquele emprego. – My grandfather had to pull some strings for me to get that job.
