Olá, pessoal, tudo bem? There’s a new comedy show in Brazil called “Vai Que Cola”. It’s broadcast on cable channel Multishow (also available on satellite dishes) and it stars actor Paulo Gustavo.
I kept thinking about the title of this show because it’s a very common expression nowadays: vai que cola. “Colar” here means to stick, like an idea, for example, you ask your dad to lend you his car and you’re sure that he’s not going to do it. However, there’s a slight chance and you say: “Vai que cola!” (Maybe this idea will stick, be successful!).
Vai que is used informally to express “what if something happens”. Here are some examples:
Não sei se meus amigos vêm para jantar ou não, mas vai que eles aparecem.
I don’t know if my friends are coming to dinner or not, but what if they come?!
Leva uma blusa! Vai que faz frio.
Bring a sweater! In case it gets cold.
Minha entrevista de trabalho não foi muito boa, mas vai que eles me contratam.
My job interview was not very good, but let’s supposed they hire me!
You’re bound to hear “vai que” in Portuguese a lot, so pay attention!
Here’s the first episode of Vai Que Cola. Even if your Portuguese is not very good, keep listening because it’s a good exercise and there are lots of interesting expressions for you to learn.
