The post title was only to catch your attention to today’s topic: how to say what you are doing, em português. So, let’s go for it!

First, this verb phrase has two parts: the verb estar (in the present) + the main verb in the gerund. Let’s review the verb estar:

eu estou
você está / tú estás
ele / ela está
nós estamos
vocês estão / vós estais [rare]
eles / elas estão

We form the gerung by adding the ending ndo to the verb. Here are some examples:

falar [to speak] – falando [speaking]
dançar [to dance] – dançando [dancing]
beber [to drink] – bebendo [drinking]
comer [to eat] – comendo [eating]
sair [to leave] – saindo [leaving]
ir [to go] – indo [going]

Now let’s make some sentences! O que você está fazendo?

Eu estou

… lavando a louça. [washing the dishes]
… varrendo o chão. [sweeping the floor]
… levando o lixo para fora. [taking out the garbage]
… lendo um artigo. [reading an article]

Ele / Ela está

… estudando português. [studying Portuguese]
… escrevendo um e-mail. [writing an e-mail]
… fazendo compras. [shopping]
… assistindo um filme. [watching a movie]

Nós estamos

… andando de bicicleta. [riding our bikes]
… conversando sobre esporte. [talking about sports]
… fazendo o almoço. [making lunch]
… fazendo uma ligação. [making a call]

Eles / Elas estão

… limpando a casa. [cleaning the house]
… passeando no parque. [walking in the park]
… estudando para a prova. [studying for the test]
… lendo um livro. [reading a book]
