If you know anything about Brazil, you know that it’s a soccer-crazy nation. But what you may not know is that even though soccer is the national sport, there are very few opportunities for women and girls–even for kids just wanting to play on a team.

There are, of course, outstanding players, like Marta. But there are very few professional opportunities for female soccer players. As the research paper Mulheres e futebol no Brasil: entre sombras e visibilidades describes:

Ainda que as mulheres brasileiras tenham praticado o futebol já nos primórdios do século XX, é evidente que essa participação foi significativamente menor que a dos homens, inclusive porque os decretos oficiais da interdição a determinadas modalidades impossibilitaram, por exemplo, que os clubes esportivos investissem em políticas de inclusão das mulheres nos esportes. Esse movimento terá seu início apenas no final da década de 70, quando se estabelecem novas bases para a organização do esporte no país, fazendo com que, em 1979, fosse revogada a deliberação do Conselho Nacional de Desportos que vedava a prática do futebol e do futebol de salão pelas mulheres.

    Great post! Very interesting! Brazilian women and soccer are similar to American women and baseball…
