Perhaps some of our readers like to make their own clothes. If that’s the case, let’s review some of the basic sewing vocabulary to help you talk about your craft in Russian.

Although sewing (шитьё, to sew – шить) is in the title of the post, other methods of making clothes include вяза́ть (на спи́цах) and вязать крючко́м.

Он не мог то́лько шить, его́ глаза́ не различа́ли иго́лку. (Sew was the only thing he could not do — his eyes could not see the needle.) [Людмила Петрушевская. Маленькая волшебница // «Октябрь», 1996]

Materials

For knitting, you will need шерсть/пря́жа (yarn) and needles (спи́цы). For crocheting, you will need крючо́к (hook) in addition to the yarn.

На пи́сьменном столе́ але́ли клубки́ вяза́льной ше́рсти… (Red balls of knitting yarn were lying on the table.) [Сергей Довлатов. Заповедник (1983)]

Люблю́ вяза́ть на спи́цах и крючко́м, чита́ть кни́ги, осо́бенно ска́зки наро́дов ми́ра. (I like knitting and crocheting, and reading books, especially folk tales from around the world.) [Переписка (2003) // «Сельская новь», 2003.10.07]

For sewing, you will need нить/ни́тка (thread) and игла/иголка (needle). If you are sewing from scratch, you will need a pattern (вы́кройка), some fabric (ткань), and possibly a sewing machine (шве́йная маши́на).

Some useful verbs to describe the sewing process are

шить – to sew

крои́ть ткань – to cut fabric

распа́рывать – to rip the seams

намета́ть – to baste

Sewing Sayings

Finally, there are several sayings that mention sewing. Let’s take a look at a few.

Ши́то бе́лыми ни́тками – something is obvious and will fall apart under scrutiny:

Шеф наста́ивал на том, что репортаж о самой большой картошине не соответствует действительности и является фальсификацией, шитой белыми нитками. (My boss insisted that the report on the largest potato did not reflect reality and was a blatant falsification.) [Дмитрий Липскеров. Последний сон разума (1999)]

Не лы́ком шит – is not so naïve, has been around the block

Да и бандю́га э́тот ― не лы́ком шит: не пе́рвый раз на допро́се. (This goon wasn’t easily intimidated, either — it wasn’t his first interrogation.) [Михаил Гиголашвили. Чертово колесо (2007)]

С ми́ра по ни́тке – го́лому руба́шка – refers to pitching in, putting resources together to achieve a goal

[Он] содержи́м был на счет офице́рской скла́дчины: «с ми́ра по ни́тке ― го́лому рубашка», говори́т посло́вица. ([His] expenses were covered by all officers pitching in, as in the popular saying.) [Ф. Ф. Вигель. Записки (1850-1860)]
