Telling the time in Spanish

1. First, let’s see if you know how to ask the time in Spanish:

– How do you say “What time is it?”
– How do you say in a friendly way “Do you have the time?”
– And how do you say “Do you have the time?” in a formal way?

2. Next, let´s see if you understand these times in Spanish:

– Son las tres y media
– Es la una menos veinte
– Son las ocho en punto
– Son las dos y media
– Son las doce y cuarto
– Son las cuatro y veinticinco
– Son las siete menos diez
– Es la una y media

3. Now, tell me the following times in Spanish:

– It´s quarter past three
– It´s eleven o´clock exactly
-It´s ten to one
– It´s twenty to six
– It´s quarter past five
– It´s twenty five past five
– It´s half past eight
– It´s quarter past four

4. Let´s practice now how to ask and state at what time we do things in Spanish. I will ask you at what time you or another person does something and I will say the time in English. For example: “¿A qué hora lees?” “Half past three pm” So, you will have to answer: “Leo a las tres y media”:

– ¿A qué hora coméis? 2:15pm
– ¿A qué hora escuchan música ustedes? 2:30pm
– ¿A qué hora bebes café? 8:10am
– ¿A qué hora hablas con tu madre? 1:25pm
– ¿A qué hora leen Carla y María? 4:30pm
– ¿A qué hora compras fruta? 10:45am
– ¿A qué hora ve la televisión Carlos? 11:00pm
– ¿A qué hora trabajas? 9:30am

This is all for today.

If you have the opportunity to travel to a Spanish speaking country, the time is a very easy to thing to practice. Simply approach some people and ask them the time. Don´t be shy. You might not understand perfectly the first time, but if you do this a few times, you will see how quickly your understanding improves.

See you next time!

¡Hasta luego!
