Hola ¿Cómo estáis?

In today’s interactive Spanish review lesson we are going to practice using the Spanish grammar tenses El Pretérito Indefinido and El Pretérito Imperfecto. We will compare these two past tenses to understand their important differences.

Answers to all tasks involved in this lesson will be given at the end of the post and you can also follow a link with this post to watch the original theory video lesson on the same topic.

Comparing El Pretérito Indefinido and El Pretérito Imperfecto

1. First, let´s practice conjugating Spanish verbs in both past tenses El Pretérito Indefinido and El Pretérito Imperfecto. I will say a person (yo, tú, usted etc) and a Spanish verb and I would like you to conjugate the verb in the correct way for both El Pretérito Indefinido and El Pretérito Imperfecto: (For example: Ellos / comprar: Compraron and Compraban)

Vosotros / hablar
Tú / trabajar
Ellos /decir
Nosotros / ser
Usted / ir
Yo / comer
Él /vivir
Ustedes / estar

2. Next, I will say some sentences in Spanish. I will say each sentence in two different ways – one using El Pretérito Indefinido and one using El Pretérito Imperfecto – but only one will be correct. I would like you to tell me which sentence is the correct one:

Ayer fui a la playa / Ayer iba a la playa.
Antes fui a la playa todos los días / Antes iba a la playa todos los días.
Mi abuelo llevó bigote / Mi abuelo llevaba bigote.
Ana y Silvia visitaron a su padre todos los domingos / Ana y Silvia visitaban a su padre todos los domingos.
El año pasado visitamos Madrid / El año pasado visitábamos Madrid.

3. Now, listen to the following story and answer the questions:

1. ¿Cómo era Virginia?
2. ¿Qué le dijo su hermano un día?
3. ¿Por qué no habló más Virginia?
4. ¿Qué dijo el médico?
5. ¿Qué solución buscó su hermano?

4. Finally, please find and repeat three Pretérito Indefinido sentences & three Pretérito Imperfecto sentences from my previous story.

This is all for today.

Correctly using these two Spanish past tenses is one of the trickiest things of the Spanish language, so don´t worry if you make mistakes at first. Keep practicing and try to listen to native speakers as much as possible. This will help you a lot to improve. Don’t forget also to make sure that you are watching TV programmes and films in Spanish and reading Spanish information on the internet or in books.

Nos vemos pronto. ¡Adiós!
