In this Spanish lesson we are going to learn and practice colloquial ways of diffusing situations and apologizing in Spanish. First we will learn some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short audio conversation in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Colloquial Spanish ways to apologize:

I’m really sorry: Lo siento muchísimo
My deepest apologies: Mil disculpas / Mil perdones
It’s totally my fault: Tengo toda la culpa
I went too far: Se me fue la mano
I crossed the line: Me pasé de la raya
I don’t know what I was thinking: No sé en qué estaba pensando
Forgive me: Perdóname
This will never happen again: No volverá a pasar
I’m so embarrassed: Qué vergüenza / corte
I’m so ashamed: Qué pena me da
I’m such an idiot: Qué idiota soy
What a stupid thing to do: Qué idiotez
What a mess I am: Soy un desastre

Colloquial Spanish ways to try to diffuse an awkward situation:

Relax/Chill out! ¡Tranquilo/a!
Let’s all just calm down: Vamos a tranquilizarnos
Let’s not get carried away: No es para tanto
This will all blow over: Pronto será agua pasada
This will all be forgotten very soon: Lo olvidaremos pronto
Tomorrow we will laugh about this: Mañana nos reiremos de esto
It’s not what it looks like!: ¡No es lo que parece!
This doesn’t make any sense: Esto no tiene sentido
I didn’t mean to do it: Fue sin querer
Oh, don’t make a scene/such a fuss!: ¡Ay, no armes un escándalo!
Put up with it!: ¡Aguántatelo!
Get over it!: ¡Olvídalo!
Don’t go over the top!: ¡No te pases!
I really think that you are overreacting a little: Creo que estás exagerando un poco
You are acting like a crazy person!: ¡Estás actuando como un loco/una loca!
You are talking rubbish!: ¡Estás diciendo chorradas! / ¡Estás diciendo tonterías!

Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Nina: Hola Gary ¿Qué te pasa?
Gary: Pues que llevo esperándote una hora aquí.
Nina: ¿Una hora? ¿Pero cómo es eso posible?
Gary: Porque habíamos quedado a las ocho y son las nueve.
Nina: Oh, lo siento muchísimo Gary. Pensaba que habíamos quedado a las nueve, de verdad.
Gary: Pues no, habíamos quedado a las ocho.
Nina: Bueno, bueno. No es para tanto. Venga, vámonos al cine.
Gary: No, ya no podemos. La película ya ha empezado.
Nina: Oh, mil perdones. Tengo toda la culpa. Pero ha sido sin querer. De verdad que yo pensaba que habíamos quedado a las nueve.
Gary: Ya, claro. Bueno, yo me voy a casa. No tengo nada más que hablar contigo.
Nina: ¿A casa? Creo que estás exagerando un poco, Gary. Vamos a tomarnos algo, venga.
