In this Spanish lesson we are going to practice using phrases and structures to react to the actions of others. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

This lesson is part of a Spanish course that practices the grammar and vocabulary first introduced in my Intermediate Spanish course posted here on the Transparent Language blog. Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Intermediate Spanish Lesson – Phrases and structures to react to the actions of others

Now play the audio to listen a conversation between between two friends. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:

Olivia: Hola Steven. Ayer te vi cantar en el bar de Pepe. No sabía que cantaras tan bien.
Steven: Bueno, soy solo un aficionado.
Olivia:¿Qué dices? Cantas fenomenal. Y juegas al tenis también ¿no?
Steven: Sí, pero no muy bien.
Olivia: Me encanta que seas tan modesto. No como Juan. Odio que se pase el día diciendo lo bien que juega al fútbol. ¡Si no tiene ni idea!
Steven: Bueno Olivia. Es normal que tengas rencor a Juan. Te hizo mucho daño. A mí la verdad es que me divierte que hable tanto de lo bien que hace todo. Es bastante entretenido.
Olivia: ¿Entretenido? Pues yo no lo puedo aguantar. Me resulta insoportable que hable tanto de si mismo. Es la persona más egocéntrica que conozco. Por cierto, no le tengo nada de rencor. Me encantó que me dejara por esa boba de Silvia. Son tal para cual.
Steven: Me fascina que seas tan positiva.
Olivia: Sí, lo digo en serio. Que Juan me dejara fue lo mejor que me ha pasado en la vida. Odiaba que solo pensara en él y que nunca me preguntara cómo estaba. Ahora soy mucho más feliz.
Steven: Me alegro mucho por ti Olivia.
Olivia: Bueno, entonces cuando vas a hacer otro concierto. Me encantaría verte cantar otra vez. Y llamaré a todas mis amigas para que tengas mucho público.
Steven: ¿Concierto? Bueno, bueno. Que no soy cantante profesional. Pepe me dijo que el cantante que iba a actuar había cancelado en el último momento y necesitaba a alguien. Así que canté unas canciones para ayudarle.
Olivia: Pues creo que deberías plantearte cantar profesionalmente. Eres genial.
Steven: Gracias Olivia, eres muy amable.
