Practice The Past Tense With Songs: Me Dediqué a Perderte Posted by on Feb 23, 2014 in Spanish Culture, Uncategorized

Hey, there!

I use songs in my classes all the time. Why? First, because I love music and also because music brings people together and it’s a fun way to learn.

I chose a song by Mexican singer Leonel García, featuring Thalía. This song has lots of verbs in Simple Past and the Imperfect tense.

So enjoy!

Me Dediqué a Perderte – Leonel García feat. Thalía

Por qué no te besé en el alma
Why didn’t I kiss you in the soul

Cuando aún podía
When I still could

Por qué no te abracé la vida
Why didn’t I hug life for you

Cuando la tenía
When I still had it

Y yo que no me daba cuenta
And I didn’t realize

Cuanto te dolía
How much that hurt you

Y yo que no sabía
And I didn’t know

El daño que me hacía
How much it was hurting me

Cómo es que nunca me fijé
However did I not realize

Que ya no sonreías
That you were not smiling anymore

Y que antes de apagar la luz
And that before turning off the light

Ya nada me decías
You wouldn’t tell me anything

Que aquel amor se te escapó
That that love that slipped through your fingers

Que había llegado el día
That the day had come

Que ya no me sentías
That you didn’t feel me anymore

Que ya ni te dolía
That you didn’t feel a thing anymore

Me dediqué a perderte
I was determined to losing you

Y me ausenté en momentos
And I was absent in moments

Que se han ido para siempre
That are gone forever

Me dediqué a no verte
I was determined to not seeing you

Y me encerré en mi mundo y
And I closed myself in my world and

No pudiste detenerme
You couldn’t stop me

Y me alejé mil veces
And I moved away a thousand times

Y cuando regresé
And when I came back

Te había perdido para siempre
I had lost your forever

Y quise detenerte
And I wanted to stop you

Entonces descubrí
Then I found out

Que ya mirabas diferente
That you were looking at me differently

Me dediqué a perderte
I was determined to losing you

Me dediqué a perderte
I was determined to losing you

Por qué no te llené de mí
Why didn’t I fill myself with you

Cuando aún había tiempo
When there was still time

Por qué no pude comprender
Why couldn’t I understand

Lo que hasta ahora entiendo
What I understand now

Que fuiste todo para mí
That you were everything to me

Y que yo estaba ciego
And that I was blind

Te dejé para luego
I left you for afterwards

Este maldito ego
This damned ego

Me dediqué a perderte…
I was determined to losing you…

Hi! Thank you for this song, I love it.

I was wondering… Is it typical for songs to not follow the ‘traditional’ rules for imperfecto/indefinido use, since it’s not really a story from A to Z?

    Thanks!

PS Would you say that sometimes the tenses are interchangeable (me dediqué/me dedicaba), or is every sentence a clear case of each tense use for you?

  3. Imran:

Thanks a lot . 🙂 Me encanta mucho.
