Song: Quitapenas, de Javier Calamaro Posted by on Feb 20, 2011 in Spanish Culture

Here’s a cool Argentinean singer with a very powerful voice, Javier Calamaro. The song is called Quitapenas (Pain remover) and here are the video and the translated lyrics. Enjoy!

Tengo fuego en la cabeza (I have fire in my head)
sigo dando vueltas como un trompo (I keep spinning like a top)
para quitarme esta pena (to remove this pain)
quiero el consuelo de los locos (I want the crazy men’s consolation)
Y ya me está pegando la ansiedad (Anxiety is starting to get me)
Me voy a seguir metiendo quitapenas para olvidar (I’ll keep on taking quitapenas to forget)
Por esa boca, por esos ojos (Because of that mouth, because of those eyes)
estoy perdido, no ves… estoy todo roto… (I’m lost, can’t you see? I’m all broken…)
Son siete vidas las que tenía (I had seven lives)
y me las quitaste en un solo día de amor (And you took them from me in only one day of loving)

Quiero arrancarme este dolor (I want to get rid of this pain)
Necesito un quitapenas (I need a quitapenas)
Para sacarme esta condena (To get rid of this sentence)
¿No ves q’estoy todo roto (Can’t you see I’m all broken)
esperando que me vengas a arreglar? (waiting for you to fix me?)

Ahí se acerca mi alma en pena (There comes my ailing soul)
cantando a los corazones rotos (singing to the broken hearts)
Soy el muerto y mi condena (I’m the dead one and my sentence)
bailando la rumba de los locos (dancing the crazy men’s rumba)
Y a la noche salgo a brindar de bar en bar (And at night I go out to drink from bar to bar)
bebiendo quitapenas para olvidar (drinking quitapenas to forget)

Por esa boca, por esos ojos…

Also check out the making of the video, en español, where he explains the origin of the word quitapenas.
