After exploring the Chilean capital of Santiago, we’re headed to the coast to visit another famous city – Valparaíso. This hilly port city is famous for its colorful buildings, vibrant street art, bohemian vibe, and wild New Year’s Eve party. Let’s learn all about Valparaíso and learn a lot of Spanish at the same time as we introduce this cool Chilean city.

Welcome to Valpo.

Valparaíso está ubicado en la costa pacífica en la zona central de Chile.  Está a sólo 120 kilómetros al noroeste de Santiago. Valparaíso es la segunda ciudad más importante de Chile. Más de 900.000 personas viven en la región.  Es una ciudad bohemia y un centro cultural muy destacado. También es un centro educacional ya que muchas universidades están ubicadas en la zona. Se le ha llamado “la joya del Pacífico” pero estos días mucha gente la llama “Valpo.”

Valparaiso is located on the Pacific coast in central Chile. It’s only 120 kilometers northwest of Santiago. Valparaiso is the 2nd most important city in Chile. More than 900,000 people live in the region. It’s a very bohemian city and is a major cultural hub. It’s also an educational center, as many universities are located here. It has been called “The Jewel of the Pacific,” but these days many people simply call it “Valpo.”

Como tiene muchas colinas, Valparaíso instaló un sistema de funiculares como ascensores. Te detienes en un cafecito y luego tomas uno para subir. Muchos artistas viven en Valparaíso, y vas a ver las asombrosas muestras de arte callejero repartidas por toda la ciudad. Es divertido para dar vueltas por sus callecitas curvilíneas en búsqueda de arte. También puedes disfrutar los coloridos edificios y las vistas de la ciudad.

Street art is everywhere!

As it is a very hilly city, Valparaiso installed a system of funicular lifts. Stop in a local cafe and then take the short ride up the hill. Many artists live in Valparaiso, and you’ll see amazing street art all over the city. It’s fun to just wander around the city’s winding streets in search of art. You can also enjoy the colorful buildings and great views of the city. 

¡Feliz año nuevo!

Valparaíso es un lugar muy popular para festejar el año nuevo. Millones de personas vienen exclusivamente a eso. A medianoche, hay una muestra gigantesca de fuegos artificiales que recorren la bahía. La fiesta sigue toda la noche, mientras la gente bebe, canta y baila hasta que el sol sale. 

Valparaiso is a very popular spot to go on New Year’s Eve. Millions of people come out to celebrate. At midnight, there is a giant fireworks display all along the bay line. The party goes all night here, as people drink, sing, and dance until the sun comes up.

Talk about a hangover cure…

Cuando despiertes, necesitas probar la especialidad – chorrillana – que consiste en una base de papas fritas y cubierta en carne salteada, huevos revueltos, cebolla frita y aveces queso o crema ácida. Te recomendamos acompañarlo con un “terremoto”, que debe su nombre a la mezcla que contiene pipeño (vino fresco), fernet y helado de piña. ¡Atrévete! es una gran cura para la resaca (cruda, caña, como quieras llamarla).

Would you drink an “Earthquake”?

After all that partying, you need to try a local specialty – chorilllana – French fries topped with beef, scrambled eggs, and fried onions. You can also drink a terremotto (earthquake), which owes its name to the devastating mix of drinks like pipeño, fernet and pineapple ice cream. It’s a great hangover (cruda, caña, or whatever you call it) cure! 

Viña del Mar

Puedes tomar un bus a Viña del Mar en la tarde. Es llamada la ciudad jardín ya que es un destino turístico muy popular y reconocido por su belleza. Hay muchas playas donde puedes relajarte.

You can take a bus to Viña del Mar for the afternoon. It’s called the Garden City and is a popular tourist destination. There are many beaches here where you can relax.

Nighttime is the right time in Valpo.

Valparaíso también ofrece una vida nocturna genial. Hay cervecerías artesanales donde puedes probar las especialidades mientras escuchas jazz en vivo. También hay bares donde puedes ir a tomar por poco dinero con amigos. Muchos músicos y artistas presentan en las calles. Siempre hay una atmósfera muy movida por las noches.

Valparaiso also has great nightlife. There’s a brewery here where you can try craft beers and listen to live jazz. There are also plenty of dive bars where you can get a cheap drink with friends. Many musicians and dancers perform in the streets. It’s always a lively atmosphere here at night.

What a cool city!
