Verbs with two objects Posted by on Dec 16, 2011 in Spanish Grammar

As we saw last week, we have verbs that have direct and indirect objects. Some verbs, however, have two objects: one direct and another indirect (with a preposition). Let’s see an example:

Él escribió la carta para mí. – He wrote the letter to me.
la carta – direct object
para mí – indirect objetc (see the preposition?)

When we use pronouns to replace these objects here’s how it works:

Él escribió la carta para mí.
Él me la escribió.

The indirect object, the one with the preposition, comes first. Now pay close attention to the following example:

Él dio una flor a ella. (He gave a flower to her.)

If we were to use the correct pronouns the sentence would be like this:

Él le la dio.

But due to sound issues we must use the pronoun se instead of le in these cases.

Él se la dio.
se – to her
la – the flower

Want to try converting some more sentences like the ones above? Remember that the indirect object comes first, ok? And don’t look at the answers below.

1. Ella dio un juguete a él.
2. Nosotros hemos comprado este regalo para ti.
3. La professora explicó el problema a las niñas.
4. El cartero trajo la correspondencia para nosotros.
5. La madre de Cilene compró un vestido para ella.
6. Ella prestó el abrigo a Julio.
8. He contado todo a mi amiga.
9. No digas eso a ella.
10. Él compró el disco para ella.
11. Ella escribió las cartas para ellos.
