An unspoken topic Posted by on Jan 14, 2011 in Culture

In this blog post the comparisons are based on Swedish and Japanese television only, please understand that there might be more views on this matter, and please feel free to share them in a positive and constructive manner.

When abroad you realize a lot of things about your own country, I realized things about Sweden and Swedish television through watching Japanese TV. An oddity to me was that people kept on telling me that “this TV show host”  had in fact before hand been a man but had felt that he/she was in the wrong type of body and had then had an operation. First of all that was a shock because in Sweden there are noand talk show hosts who have changed sex that I can think about. Any TV coverage is usually done in documentary form, talking about discrimination or improvement areas for the dealing with the problems that transsexuals face. In everyday life in Sweden talking about TV shows, famous people et.c. men and women who have changed sex just rarely come up as a topic – even though Sweden is looked upon as an open minded place.

Is it common for transsexuals to appear on television without the reason being because they have changed sex? Is it a not-so-talked about subject?
