Give us your most inspiring Swede! Posted by Katja on Apr 12, 2011 in Culture
When you think of Swedish figures, famous people or characters from books, who is most important to you?
Of course there are a lot of internationally known characters like the author Astrid Lindgren, and in her stories Pippi Långstrump (Longstocking) but then again does that mean anything to you?
Has any person in Swedish history ever interested you or inspired you?
For a lot of children doing sport their dream is to meet the Swedish football pros like Zlatan Ibrahiemovich and that dream alone has motivated them to go to football practice several days a week, even when it is raining.
In your opinion is there any Swedish person or group that everybody should know about for their efforts or contributions to society? A very well-respected person by a lot of Swedish people is Olof Palme, assassinated former prime-minister. He was very compassionate about changing Sweden into a fairer and more classless country, and until the day he was killed, he worked hard to achieve that change.
Please share, if only brieftly, any Swedish person or organization that holds meaning to you.

When I think of Swedes that bring joy to my life, I think of two…..First, the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, inventor of the universally recognized system of classifying plants and animals….I was given the name Linnea after the flower of his name. Second, I think of Carl Larsson who gave us a perspective on Swedish life through his captivating paintings.

I think everybody who loves music should know “Woods of Infinity”.
One coz most of their lyrics are in Swedish, two coz their lyrics are brilliant like this:
“I’m so provoked by the ever-consuming meaninglessness that I daily observe. I see dead people living their smiling satisfied lives.”
and three because Woods Of Infinity will lead you do divinity!

I am an Architect, so two of the most prominent figures in my mind are Erik Gunnar Asplund, the Architect for the Stockholm Library, and skogkrykogarden cemetery and crematorium in Stockholm, and Sigurd Leverentz, another famous Swedish Architect of the early 20th century, who worked with Asplund on the design of this great site.

Carl Larsson, the turn of the century Arts and Crafts Movement Artist and Watercolorist, who painted his own family and home in a very warm style and personality.

Since my biggest passion is the music, I think of Roxette, my favourite band ever. I have also an emotional bond to it, maybe that’s why i like it so much, dunno =)

Anders Zorn. I love his depictions of of peasant people in Dalarna. My favorite it a woman in the woods with a cow in the background. I’m sorry I don’t know the name of it. There is also one of people in Mora dancing on midsummer eve, and one of a woman bathing.
