Swedish Candy and Sweets Posted by on Sep 16, 2010 in Culture, Uncategorized

Sweden tops the list of sweets and candy consuming countries with a yearly 18 kgs per person/year. In this post I will try to give you a short overlook about Swedish sweets (svenskt godis). Swedish sweets and candy is a part of the Swedish holidays, Fridays (just think about fredagsmys) and also the coffee breaks (fikapauser) on Fridays at the most work places..ah okay this one is maybe an exaggeration because then you usually have a bigger sugar-load…big, fat cakes.

Things you shouldn´t leave on a shelf when buying Swedish sweets and candy;

  • Ballerina (It is the biggest and most popular product of the Gothenburg-based company Göteborgs kex since 1963). It´s filled with bland nougat flavor.
  • Sweet or Salt liquorice (lakrits) which is made of the root of the plant called liquorice.
  • Marabou chocolate with 13 different types from the Swedish town Sundbyberg, just outside of Solna in Stockholm county. It is one of the most popular chocolates in the Nordic countries since 1919.
  • Alhgrens bilar (“Sweden´s most popular car”. The company was established by Fredrik Ahlgren  in Gävle 1885. His company was originally selling perfumes but later on they were the one that introduced the so called Läkerol-tablets for better breath. You can find these tablets since 1908).
  • Polkagris is a stick candy with peppermint taste
  • Plopp (Plopp is a chocolate bar filled with toffee-chocolate cream by the famous Cloetta company. You can also find it in current, latte and tutti-frutti).
  • Geléhallon (Gumdrops in a shape and taste of raspberry, covered with white sugar).
  • Alladin chokladask  (Pralines of different taste; dark-, white- and milk chocolate. The sortiment of Alladin used to change each year, but after many complaints from customers the company decided that they would stick to only the most popular pralines like: Gräddnougat-cream nougat, Trillingnöt- Three hazelnuts covered in chocolate, Apelsintryffel-Orange truffles).
  • ZOO-tabletter (Jelly with different fruit tastes in animal shapes),
  • Kexchoklad (The Cloetta company sells approx. 30 million chocolate bars in Sweden per year. It is a kind of cracker covered with thin chocolate).

Salty licorice??? How to put this nicely hmmmm. Had to spit it out! An acquired taste?

  2. Rastik:

I like vaniljdrömmar. I’m not sure they are originaly swedish.

  3. Tibor:

    Hi Erik!

I guess you have to eat it as a child to appreciate it. Very few starting to like it as adults indeed.

  4. Tibor:

    Hi Rastik!

I love vaniljdrömmar, but once I had some that tasted almost ammonia since then I am a bit careful with them. You could feel it in your nose!

  5. Eiko:

i think … Kexchoklad (The Cloetta company sells approx. 30 million chocolate bars in Sweden per year. It is a kind of cracker covered with thin chocolate). should be on first place 😀
thats the reason why i got 85kg 😛 and yeah,,, the poly!

  6. Carla:

Yum yum yum, I have to stock up on Alhgrens Bilar <3 and Kexchoklad (and sometimes the Marabou and Ballerina as well) every time I go to our IKEA in Ohio (oooo and the kokosbollar)…..*sad sigh* now I want some. My daughter loves them also.

The only kind of licorice-ish thing I will eat are Twizzlers, lol (but not often)…..I don't think I will acquire the taste for the salty licorice either. hehe

  7. Tibor:

    Hi Carla!

Actually, I have found some really good licorice kind of sweets in Finland too..luv it!
But then I guess the mega strong so called Turkisk Peber is nothing for you…

  8. Ankan:

@Eric Nor Cal: thanks for putting it so nicely. Me too! I doubt I’d be able to ever acquire the taste. But I do enjoy shocking my friends with Swedish “sweets” 😀

  9. Christine:

    You forgot Daim! 😉

  10. Tibor:

    Hi Christine,
