In this post, I thought we’d learn some vocabulary that can help us get what we need from a pharmacy صَيْدلِيّة and how to speak with a pharmacist صَيْدَلي / صَيدلاني. Some of the vocabulary could be used to speak with a doctor طَبيْب as well. We’ll then read and listen to some general information about pharmacies in Arabic and then read and listen to a conversation between a customer زُبون and a صَيْدَلي. 

Before we begin, can you think of anything that you could get at a صَيْدلِيّة in Arabic? 

How would you say that you are not feeling well or feel sick in Arabic?

Vocabulary المُفْرَدات

مَريض: to be ill/sick

medication :دَواء

cough: سُعال

 a cold: رَشْح/ نَزْلة بَرْد / زُكام

pain: ألَم

a fever: حرارة

prescription: وَصْفة طِبِيّة

to cure: يُعالِج

side effects: آثار جانبية

يَشْعُر بِالغَثَيان: to feel nauseous

مُضادّ حَيَويّ: antibiotic

✨General Information مَعْلومات عامة

.الصَيْدلِيّة هي المَكان التي تَحْصُل فيها على الدَواء. مُمْكِن أن تكون الصَيْدلِيّة في مُستشفى أو بِناية خاصة لِوَحْدِها 

:هُنالِك نَوعين مِن الدَواء في الصَيْدلِيّة

.الدَواء المَوجود فَوق الرَّف لِعلاج بَعْض المَشاكِل الصَّحية البَسيطة مِثْل السُّعال والرَّشح وألم المَعدة

.والدَواء الذي يَحتاج إلى وَصْفة طِبِيّة مِثْل المُضادّات الحَيَويّة

سَوفَ يَكْتُبُ الطَبيب أو الصَيْدَلي كَمية وَعَدَد المَرات التي يَجِب أن تأخُذ فيها الدَواء. وإذا كان لَديكَ أي سُؤال عَن الدَواء باستطاعَتُكَ أن تَسأل الصَيدلي فَهو خَبير في الرِّعاية الصَّحية

.بَعْض الأدوية فيها آثار جانبية مِثْل النَوم والشعور بالغَثيان

A pharmacy is a place where you can get medication. A pharmacy can be in a hospital or separate in its own building. 

There are two types of medication at the pharmacy:

Off the shelf medication to cure simple health problems such as a cough, cold, or stomach ache, and medication that needs a prescription such as antibiotics. 

The doctor or pharmacist will write how much and how often to take the medication, and if you have any questions about the medication, you can ask the pharmacist, for he is an expert in health care. Some medications have side effects such as sleep and feeling nauseous. 

✨At the Pharmacy (في الصَيْدلِيّة (مُحادثة

.الزُبون: السَّلامُ عَلَيكُم

الصَيْدَلي: وَعَلَيكُم السَّلام، كَيفَ يُمْكِنُني أن أساعِدُك؟

.الزُبون: عندي التِهاب في أُذُني وأحتاجُ إلى دَواء مِن فَضْلَك

الصَيْدَلي: مُضادّ حَيَويّ؟

.الزُبون: نَعْم

الصَيْدَلي: هَل لَديكَ وَصْفة طِبِيّة؟

.الزُبون: نَعْم، تَفَضَل

.الصَيْدَلي: شُكراً، لَحْظة واحِدة إذا سَمَحْت

الصَيْدَلي: حَسَناً، يَجِب أن تأخُذَ هذا الدَواء مَرتين في اليَوم بَعْد تَناوَل الطعام لِمُدة أسبوع. هَل لَديكَ أي سُؤال؟

الزُبون: هَل هُناك أي آثار جانِبية؟

الصَيْدَلي: مِن المُمْكِن أن تَشْعُر بالغَثَيان أحياناً. إن شاء الله خَير. هَل تَحتاج أي شيء آخَر؟

.الزُبون: عُلبة أسبيرين وفرشاة أسنان ناعِم، مِن فَضْلَك

الزُبون: كَم الحِساب؟

.الصَيْدَلي: ثَلاثةَ عشرَ ديناراً

.الزُبون: تَفَضَل

.الصَيْدَلي: سَلامَتُكَ

.الزُبون: الله يُسَلِمُك، مَع السَّلامة

Customer: Peace be upon you (hello).

Pharmacist: And on you be peace (hello), how can I help you?

Customer: I have an ear infection and need medication please. 

Pharmacist: Antibiotic?

Customer: Yes.

Pharmacist: Do you have a prescription?

Customer: Yes, here you are. 

Pharmacist: Thank you, one moment please. 

Pharmacist: Okay, you should take this medication twice daily after eating food for a week. Do you have any questions?

Customer: Are there any side effects?

Pharmacist: You may feel nauseous sometimes. God willing it will be fine. Do you need anything else?

Customer: A packet of Aspirin and a soft toothbrush please. 

Customer: How much is the total?

Pharmacist: Thirteen Dinars. 

Customer: Here you go. 

Pharmacist: Get well soon. (your safety)

Customer: Thank you (May God keep you safe), Good bye. 

 

✨إن شاء الله you always stay well, but just in case, it’s handy to have this vocabulary in mind if you were to express that you are مَريض and need دَواء, or just a simple item like a فرشاة أسنان from the صَيْدلِيّة. 🙂
