Eid Al-Fitr Posted by on Aug 19, 2012 in Culture

Yesterday was the last day of the month of Ramadan! It went by very quickly as usual, and today we celebrate the feast for three days after the end of the holy month! Before the feast, everyone who fasted the month has to give money or food to the poor, to help them enjoy the feast and to thank God for making enabling one to fast the month.

The feast is celebrated in many interesting ways!

On the first day of the feast, Muslims pray a special prayer in the morning. Then, they go to visit each other and share presents and cakes.

Families prepare or buy special cookies or biscuits to celebrate the feast, that are called (كعك العيد).

I have prepared some (كعك العيد) the day before, and it was very easy and quick to prepare. Please find the ingredients and preparation steps below:

You will need:

500 grams of flour

250 grams of butter

100 grams of milk

1 small spoon of either baking powder or yeast

1 small spoon of sugar

You can add a little bit of flavourings you like, e.g. rose water, vanilla, etc.

Filling: Nuts and Turkish delight

Preparation:

Seive the flour and add to it the yeast or baking powder, sugar and butter. Mix them together until they mix completely. Then, add the milk and mix until you have a dough ball. Leave it for at least one hour for the yeast to raise it a little bit.

Make small balls or dough and fill them with peices of Turkish delight and nuts. My favourite nuts are walnuts, but you can also use hazelnuts or almonds. You then need to make patterns on top of your cookies to allow for sugar to cover it properly. You do not need to add sugar now.

Leave the small cookies for one hour, then bake them in the oven at  180 degrees, gas mark 5, until they are golden in colour.

When they cool down, cover them with sugar and serve!

Enjoy!

There are many different ways for preparing (كعك العيد).
