In this blog post, I’m going to introduce you to another set of basic phrases that are related to age عبارات ذات صلة بالعمر and few lines you can use to enquire about someone’s age للسؤال عن عمر أحد ما .

To introduce you to phrases related to age, I’m going to use another short clip, taken from the same Arab talent show برنامج المواهب العربية – Arab Idol – that I used a few weeks ago in order to focus on greeting phrases. The phrases will be included as part of three short conversation in spoken Arabic.

المحادثة الأولى

First Conversation

 

١: إنتِ صُغَيَّرة أوي، ها؟

You’re too young, ha?

 

عندِك كم سنة؟ سبعطاشر؟

How old are you? Seventeen?

• To comment on how old someone is:

صُغَيَّرة: Young – (Feminine)

صُغَيَّر:  Young – (Masculine)

كِبِيرة: Old – (Feminine)

كِبِير:  Old – (Masculine)

• To ask about someone’s age:

 

 You have how many years? = How old are you? – (Feminine) عَنْدِك كم سَنَة؟

 You have how many years? = How old are you? – (Feminine) عَنْدَك كم سَنَة؟

*“My age is” عُمري is the same phrase that is used in pretty much all Arabic varieties as well as Standard Arabic
