Everyday (cultural) phrases in colloquial Egyptian Arabic: ‘Hope for the best’ (1) Posted by on Sep 12, 2018 in Arabic Language, Culture, Vocabulary

In this post, we’re going to look at a nice song that was quite famous during the previous Ramadan season. The song titled اتْفَائْلُوا بِالْخِيرْ  ‘hope for good’, which is produced in Egyptian Arabic, by the talented singer Yasmin Ali. أَمْرْ وَاقَعْ

From a linguistic point of view, the song is very interesting as it’s quite rich with the cultural phrases that could be of use to many of advanced learners of (colloquial) Arabic. The song includes eight phrases (used as general pieces of advice) that may sound a bit alien to non-Arabic speakers if heard out of context or if translated literally.

*The post is in three parts. For the first (current) part, we’re going to look at the lyrics in Egyptian Arabic (as produced originally in the song) and also provide the standard Arabic version of the lyrics. The second and third parts will be dedicated to two sets of phrases that will be explained in detail.

For now, here is the clip of the song that you need to watch so you can follow the lyrics below.

كلمات الآغنية
The lyrics

See you next week to when we’ll be starting to looking at the phrases.
