Irregular Verbs in Arabic (Part 4): Conjugating Verbs that Begin with a Vowel Posted by on Jan 30, 2010 in Grammar

This post deals with conjugation of verbs that begin with the vowel (و)(الفعل المثال الواوي), e.g. (وصل) ‘arrived, (وعد) ‘promised, etc. In the present tense, which usually involves the use of prefixes, the first vowel of the verb is substituted by the prefix, i.e. the vowel which occurs in the beginning of the verb is deleted and the prefix only appears. Please note that this applies only to verbs that begin with (و); verbs that begin with (ي) are different.

  1. othmaan:

AOA! sister do irregular verbs come in all of the ten forms of the verb or only in some of them?

  2. Aziza:

    Ahlan Othmaan,
Most verb forms have fixes beginning, e.g. ت or ا according to the prefixes that appear at the beginning of the forms. Even form II verbs of the same irregular roots do not lose the first vowel like form I.
    Salaam,
    Aziza

  3. marco chiorra:

Dear Azizah, you are great in your explanations and therefore I have another question for you:
Which is the right translation into Arabic of the frase :
« I was not late to understan
    d that…»

    1) ما لبثتُ ان افهمَ انّ

    2) ما لبثَ ان افهمَ انّ

    شكرا لك

  4. Aziza:

    Ahlan Marco,
The first one is correct because the verb is correctly conjugated with the subject.
    Salaam,
    Aziza
