Picking it up where we left last week, we’re still looking at the short scenario from the Egyptian TV show سابع جار  (the seventh neighbour). In this week, I’m going to provide a translation of the same scenario we have been learning the last two weeks in Egyptian and Standard Arabic.  

We’re still looking at the same short scenario (from 2.46 to 5.43, see clip below) where Lamia is busy trying to make lunch for the guests of her neighbour whose wife has just died.

Lamia: There is no power nor might save in Allah .. I ask Allah for forgiveness

لمياء: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله.. استغفر الله العظيم يا رب

هاشوف.. يا هبة

 

It’s not going to be enough

مش هتكفّي

 

Hey you idiot! You bastard!

إنت يا هبابة! يا زفتة

 

Hello? Where are you, Laila? You left me here and I have no idea what to do

ألو؟! إيه يا ليلى؟ إنت سايباني محتاسة

 

Are you still at their place? And how is Waleed doing? There is no power nor might save in Allah

إنت لسه عندهم؟ ووليد عامل إيه؟ لا حول الله يا ربي

 

I tell you what? Come up quickly and bring me a very big cooking pot from your place

طب بقولك إيه؟ إطلعي بسرعة هاتيلي حلّة كبيرة أوي من عندك

 

No, because the one I have isn’t enough

Hiba! You idiot, you bastard! Answer me

يا هبة! إنت يا زفتة يا هبابة! ردي علياّ

 

Hiba: What’s wrong mom? What is it, what is it, mom?

هبة: في إيه يا ماما؟ إيه يا ماما

 

Lamia: Where have you been Hiba? Where where?

لمياء: إيه يا هبة.. إيه إيه

 

Haven’t you heard that Waleed’s mom has died?

ما عرفتيش إن أم وليد اتوفت؟

 

Hiba: Yes yes, I heard.

هبة: أيوا أيوا عرفت

 

Lamia: And how did you hear about it?

لمياء: وعرفتي منين يعني؟

 

Hiba: I don’t know, I have heard you speaking and I thought I was just dreaming.

هبة: معرفش.. سمعتكو كنت فاكرة إني بحلم

 

This lady.. I used to love her.. May Allah have mercy on her

والله يعني الست دي..  كنت بحبها.. الله يرحمها

 

Lamia: come here, where are you going? Be a bit considerate!

لمياء: تعالي هنا رايحة فين؟ خلي عند أهلك دم

 

Aren’t you going to help with anything?

مش هتساعديني في أي حاجة؟

 

Hiba: Mom, you know I know nothing about cooking

هبة: يا ماما ما بعرفش أعمل إيه في الطبيخ

 

Lamia: Nobody asked you to cook!

لمياء: ما حدّش قالك اطبخي

 

Here, make a call for me. Speak to Aunt Samia.. ask her to let the bridegroom’s (groom-to-be) mom to postpone the visit to today or tomorrow.

خدي.. اعمليلي مكالمة .. كلمي الحاجة سامية.. خليها تبلّغ أم العريس تأجل الزيارة النهار ده ولا بكرا

 

Hiba: What?!

هبة: إيه؟

 

Lamia: I meant tomorrow or the day after.

لمياء: قصدي بكرا ولا بعدو

 

(The doorbell s ringing)

{جرس البيت يرنّ}

 

Oh God!

لمياء: يا باي

 

Ok come here. Go and open the door to you aunt, she has the cooking pot with her

طب تعالي هنا! تعالي افتحي لخالتك جايبة الحلّة

 

Come on, come on, move!

يللا يللا تحرّكي كده

 

I ask Allah for forgiveness

استغفر الله العظيم

 

Laila: How ae you Bouby, darling?

ليلى: إزيّك يا بوبي يا حبيبتي؟

 

Hiba: How are you, aunty?

هبة: إزيك يا خالتو؟

 

Laila: move a little bit, take this, hold this for your aunty.

ليلى: وسّعي.. خودي يا حبيبتي شيلي عن خالتو

 

Take the meat. Oh dear God.

شيلي اللحمة دي! يا ساتر يا رب

 

How are you, Lamia? I’ve brought the meat and the cooking pot.

إزيّك يا لمياء! جبت اللحمة وجبت الحلّة

 

Lamia: Ok, won’t this meat make things look a bit different?

لمياء: طب واللحمة دي مش هتعمل فرق بقى مش هيبان؟

 

Laila: no no no no it’s not going to be obvious. We’ll just hopefully add it all together, in the name of Allah, the most merciful, and the most beneficent.

ليلى: لالالا ما فيش هيبان حاجة .. إن شاء الله هتتحط كلها على بعضها .. وبسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

 

Oh God, oh God.. the blessing is from you.. Allah’s hand before mine

يا رب يا رب.. البركة من عندك.. إيد الله قبل إيدي

لمياء: طب

 

Laila: After I put it like this, I put it on the stove

ليلى: أنا بعد ما أحطها كده.. أحطها عالنار

 

Lamia: And you add the spices, and stuff

لمياء: وتزودي البهارات بقى  والحاجات

 

Hiba: Mom, mom!

هبة: ماما .. ماما

 

Laila: And the spices off course.

ليلى: والبهارات طبعا

 

Lamia: Where is the lid of this cooking pot?

لمياء: فين الغطا تبع بتاع الحلّة دي؟

 

Laila: no, I haven’t brought the lid. I’m going up to get nut meg, bay leaves and cardamom as well.

ليلى: لأ هو أنا ما جبتش الغطا، وبالمرّة أطلع أجيب جوزة الطيب وكمان ورق اللاورا وحبهان 

 

Hiba: Mom!

هبة: يا ماما

 

Lamia: What do you want? Sort yourself out

لمياء: مامة إيه بقى! اعملي حاجة في دنيتك

 

You don’t even want to make a phone call?

إيه حتى مكالمة التلفون مش عايزة تعمليها

 

Hiba: Why don’t you call her yourself? I don’t understand.

هبة: وما كلمتيهاش إنت ليه؟ مش فاهمة

 

Lamia: I’ve been trying to call her since this morning and she’s not answering! I’ve got millions of things to do.

لمياء: مانا بكلمها من الصبح ما بتردش! ورايا مية ألف حاجة

 

Laila: Who is this person who you’re calling and not answering?

ليلى: هي من دي اللي إنت بتكلميها وما بتردش؟

 

Lamia: Lady Samia, the one who found that groom-to-be for Doaa’.

لمياء: الحاجة سامية اللي هي جايبة العريس بتاع دعاء

 

Laila: Oh right, true! He was supposed to come over today, I just remembered now.

ليلى: آه آيوا صحيح.. ده كان معادو النهار ده.. فكرتيني

 

Lamia: It’s good that I remembered in the first place. He had this arranged three weeks again, and he rarely takes any days off.
