Nizar Qabbani: Five Love Texts Posted by Fisal on Sep 27, 2012 in Arabic Language, Culture, Pronunciation, Vocabulary
It has been a while since we last read any Arabic poetry! Today we are going to read a poem by the great Arab poet Nizar Qabbani. The poem is entitled, “Five Love Texts خـمــســةُ نــُُــصـــُـــوص عــَــن الــحــُـــبّ ”. In the poem, Nizar boasts of being in love. He says that his love is indescribable and everlasting. No one can explain this love in any ancient or modern language. This love raises so many questions that he can not find any answers to them in poetry. Yet, this love inspires him with millions of sweet words.

Five Love Texts
(1)
Your Love is ..
A historical event from those of the universe
And a wedding for flowers and grass
A revelation that descends
Or does not descend
A baby that is born
Or that is not born
Lightning that glitters
Or that does not glitter
A moon that rises
Or that does not rise.
(2)
Your Love is ..
A Cuneiform text
An Assyrian text
A Phoenician text
A Sriyani text
A Pharaonic text
A Hindu text
A text that is not written in any book.
(3)
Your Love is ..
A time between peace and war.
And there is no war
Worse than that on nerves.
(4)
Your Love is ..
A magical tunnel
With millions of doors
Whenever I open one
Another is closed
Sweetness pours out of my lips
And if I flirt with you once, O, my Lady,
The Arabs kill me.
(5)
Your Love ..
Raises a thousand questions
That have no answer in poetry.
