.من السِّفَرْ

Nothing Pleases Me (Translation by Fadi Joudah)

Nothing pleases me

the traveler on the bus says-Not the radio

or the morning newspaper, nor the citadels on the hills.

I want to cry

The driver says: Wait until you get to the station,

then cry alone all you want

A woman says: Me too. Nothing

pleases me. I guided my son to my grave,

he liked it and slept there, without saying goodbye

A college student says: Nor does anything

pleases me. I studied archeology but didn’t

find identity in stone. Am I

really me?

And a soldier says: Me too. Nothing

pleases me. I always besiege a ghost

besieging me

The edgy driver says: Here we are

almost near our last stop, get ready

to get off…

Then they scream: We want what’s beyond the station,

keep going!

As for myself I say: Let me off here. I am

like them, nothing pleases me, but I’m worn out

From travel.

Understanding the poem فهم القصيدة

I’ve come across a few different interpretations تفسيرات of this poem. I wanted to share two with you. One is a more detailed political interpretation تفسير سياسي which I’ll be focusing on in both parts of this post. The other is a short interpretation of the poem that focuses on questioning the meaning of life معنى الحياة

Let’s first try to answer some questions to help us analyze the poem.

ما هي نبرة الشاعر في القصيدة؟ هل هي تفاؤل، تشاؤم، مرح، حزين؟

What is the author’s tone in the poem? Is it optimistic, pessimistic, cheerful, sad?

ما هي الفكرة الرئيسية للقصيدة؟

What do you think the main idea is?

أعط ثلاث كلمات في لغتك تعبرعن هذه القصيدة برأيك. هل تعرف أي منهم باللغة العربية؟

Give three words in your language that come to mind after reading this poem. Do you know any of them in Arabic?

هل يوجد تكرار في هذه القصيدة؟ إذا نعم، ما هي الكلمة أو العبارة التي تتكرر؟

Is there repetition in this poem? If so, what word or phrase is repeated?

على ماذا يرمز الباص وسائق الباص برأيك؟

What do you think the bus and bus driver symbolize?

Here is a possible overall interpretation of the poem that focuses on the meaning of life.

مثل المسافرين، نحن أيضاً يأتينا شعور مفاجئ بأن شيئاً لم يعد يعجبنا، فجأة قد يصبح لا معنى له، ولا قيمة، ونسأل عن معنى الحياة. في الحافلة، طلب المسافرون من السائق أن ينزلهم في ما بعد المحطة الأخيرة، كانوا يمتلكون شيئاً من الأمل يبحثون عن معنى الحياة

Just like the travelers, we also get a sudden feeling that there is something we no longer like that suddenly becomes meaningless and worthless, and we ask about the meaning of life. On the bus, the travelers asked the driver to drop them off after the last stop, they had a bit of hope, searching for the meaning of life.

Here is a possible political interpretation of the first part of the poem (from beginning to “without saying goodbye”) that revolves around الصراع الإسرائيلي – الفلسطيني the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

The poem begins with presenting the “bus” as a symbol of the poet and travelers’ journey in life. The first traveler does not like “the radio, nor the morning newspapers” which only contain pain, disasters and uprisings, and from here comes the desire of the traveler to cry. Then the driver answers him, who perhaps symbolizes fate: “Wait until you get to the station, then cry alone all you want”.

That is, no one cares about your crying, and the Palestinian issue has become a regular piece of news in the media which no one cares about.

Mothers usually die before their children, but due to the conflict, children are dying before their mothers in the battles far from their families without saying goodbye.

ما رأيك في هذه التفسيرات؟

What are your thoughts on these interpretations?

I hope you enjoyed the first part of this post and enriched your Arabic vocabulary through this beautiful poem. Stay tuned for part two where we will continue to analyze the second part of the poem.

Till next week, happy Arabic learning! ☺
