Saving the Dead Sea Part Two Posted by on Nov 24, 2021 in Arabic Language, Environment, Travel & Geography

In last week’s post, we talked about the Dead Sea البحر الميت and began a clip that explains the reasons why البحر الميت is sadly receding تنحسر. In this second part of the clip, we learn about The Bahrain Canal project مشروع قناة البحرين to link البحر الميت to البحر الأحمر as a way to revive البحر الميت.

Here is a photo I took of the Dead Sea salt shoreline.

I’ve transcribed the first half of the clip to help you follow along as you listen and discern each word.

Be sure to try and answer the questions at the bottom. 🤓

These characteristics made it one of the richest seas in natural salts that are used in the production of cosmetics and a destination for visitors looking for natural healing as well. The Bahrain Canal project was one of the last minute solutions to save this sea, which is supposed to bring together Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority to one goal, which is to revive the Dead Sea.

The project that was agreed upon years ago was to construct a canal with a length of approximately 1,800 km to connect the Dead Sea with the Red Sea. This project was supposed to restore the ecological balance in the Dead Sea to normal and establish desalination plants for the benefit of the three parties in an area where water scarcity is one of the underlying causes of a future water war. The project is now in the past due to the conflict of interests between these parties and the political differences between them. Which means firing a bullet of mercy at a sea that is actually already dead.

Questions:

Give two uses for the Dead Sea salts.

Explain the purpose of the The Bahrain Canal project.

Why was this project never carried out?

هدف

I hope you found this video to be  interesting and good Arabic comprehension practice.

What attracts you to visit the Dead Sea?

Till next week, happy Arabic learning! 😊
