Subjects in Arabic Posted by aziza on Feb 17, 2017 in Arabic Language, Grammar, Vocabulary
The subject is one grammatical term in English, however in Arabic we have two types of subject.
Subject = المبتدأ
Subject = الفاعل
We explain each term and give examples below:
Subject = المبتدأ
This is the beginning of the nominal sentence in Arabic. Nominal sentences have two parts: the subject (المبتدأ) and the predicate (الخبر). The subject tells us what the sentence is about and it is usually a definite noun or a pronoun at the beginning of the sentence. The predicate tells us something about the subject.
Can you identify the subject (المبتدأ) in the following sentences?
خالد صديقي.
هي طالبة.
الولد صغير.
هذا كتابي.
أنتم طيبون جداً.
Subject = الفاعل
This is the subject of a verb. Each verb must have a subject. It can be explicit or hidden, but we know it from the way the verb is conjugated.
Can you identify the subject (الفاعل) in the following sentences?
اشتريتُ كتابي أمس.
شاهد محمد الفيلم.
