Marhaba! It is hard not to come across a spy or an intelligence related story in the news. Be it from stories of Russian hacking in the American Presidential Elections to the thousands of documents released by WikiLeaks on U.S. intelligence programs. Given the saliency and recurrent theme of spy and intelligence related stories in everyday discourse, I want to teach you the 10 most common words about spies in Arabic.

Like earlier posts, I am sharing these words in a fun Arabic crossword puzzle. As always, I have transliterated all the words so that you can pronounce them accurately. Stay tuned for the answers soon.

Spy – جاسوس
Transliteration: Ja-sus

Intelligence – مخابرات
Transliteration: Mu-kha-ba-rat

Information – معلومات
Transliteration: Ma’-lu-mat

Agent – عميل
Transliteration: ‘A-mil

Intercept – اعتراض
Transliteration: I’-ti-rad

Communication – اتصالات
Transliteration: It-ti-sa-lat

Sabotage – تخريب
Transliteration: Takh-rib

Secrecy – سرية
Transliteration: Sir-ri-ya

Courier – ساعي
Transliteration: Sa-‘i

Betrayal – خيانة
Transliteration: Khi-ya-na
