Welcome to the 2nd part of this blog post as we’re still studying a short clip from a very popular TV series called سابع جار  > The seventh neighbour. Last week, we had the transcript (in Egyptian Arabic) of the scene to follow. Today, you will be able to follow  the dialogue in English.

 

 

Scenario (in English) 

*The part we’e studying> until 1:24. 

 

هبة: طيب أنا بقترح ناخد الإكسترا أبيتايزير لينا كلنا

 Ok I suggest that we take the ‘Extra appetiser’ for all of us.

 

ليلى: ده أنهي واحد ده؟

 Which one is this?

 

هبة: هتلاقيه في الأول

 You’ll find it at the beginning

 

إيه رأيك يا ماما؟

What do you think, mom?

 

لمياء: زي ما إنتو عايزين

 As you like

 

ليلى: أيوا ده هيكفينا كلنا يعني؟

 Ok is this going to be enough for all of us, you mean?

 

هبة: لا ماهو مش ده بس.. ده قبل الأكل

 No, because not only this. This is before food ¹i.e. the main course

 

ليلى: ده بمية وأربعين جنيه

 it’s for a 140 gineeh²Egyptian pound (local currency)

 

هبة: فيها إيه يعني؟! ماهو هيتقسم علينا

 So what? It’s going to be divided on us

 

لمياء: يعني كل واحد يدفع كام؟

 I mean, how much would each one pay?

 

هبة: يا لهوتييييي

 Oh God!

 

دعاء: كل واحد خمسة وتلاتين جنيه

 35 gineeh for each one

 

لمياء: طب ماشي، حلو أوي

 Ok cool, very good

 

هبة:  طيب، هتاخدي إيه؟

 ok, what are you going to have?

 

إنت ما بتبصيش في المنيو ليه يا ماما؟ أنا عايزة أفهم

You’re not looking at the menu, why mom? I want to understand

 

لمياء: ماهو كله بالإنجليزي، والحروف صغيرة، وأنا مش شايفة

It’s all in English and the letters are small and I can’t see!

 

هبة: طيب، نفسك في حاجة عاملة إزاي؟

Ok, what kind of food would you like to have?

 

لمياء: خلاص هاكل من البتاع اللي بتقولي عليه ده

 Fine, we’ll eat this thing that you’re talking about

 

ولو إني مش جعانه

I’m not hungry though

 

هبة: يا سلام! خودي حاجة يا ماما

 Really?! Have something, mom!

 

ليلى: إيه الريزوتو ده؟

 What’s this Risotto?

 

هالة: حاجة زي الرز كده يا ماما، بس بالإيطالي

 Something like rice, but the Italian way

 

 لمياء: حلو ده؟

 Is this one good?

 

هالة: آه حلو أوي أوي

 Yeah very very nice

 

 ليلى: خلاص، أنا وأختي هناخد طلب نجرّبه

 Ok my sister and I will have one order to try

 

 لمياء: هناكل رز بس كده؟

 We’re going to eat rice only?

 

 ما نطلب جنبها حتة  فيليه؟ ومع البتاع ده، ونقسمه

Let’s order a fillet with it? and together with this thing, and share it

 

هالة: لأ طبعا، طلب واحد ما ينفعش – لازم كل واحد فيكو يطلب طلب

 Off course not, one order won’t work- each one of you must have (order) one each

 

 ليلى: إنت يا بنتي مش بتقولي إن الطباق بتاعتهم هنا كبيرة؟ والحاجات فيها كتير؟

 Oh daughter, weren’t you saying that the plates they have here are big? and the stuff in it is much

 

هناخد كل واحد طلب نعمل بيه إيه؟

What are we going to do with an order each?

 

 ولا أقولك.. خلاص، كل واحد طلب.. حتى اللي يتبقى ناخده لهند أختك

Or you know what? an order each, we will even leave what’s left to your sister, Hind

 

آه والله صعبانة عليا نتعشى من غيرها

Yeah indeed (wallahi), I feel sorry for her that we’re having dinner without her

 

هالة: يا ماما مش معقول كده! الناس كلها عرفت قصة حياتنا

Mom, this is unbelievable! People know our life story

 

 لمياء: أنا مش عارفة بقى أخد إيه.. أطلبي لي أي حاجة يا هبة وخلاص

I don’t know what to have, all right, just order anything for me, Hiba

 

 هبة: يا جدعان كفاية بؤس بقى! كفاية

Guy, oh come on – enough of the misery! Enough!

 

ما تطلبوا اللي إنتو عايزينه بسعادة! في إيه؟

Why not order happily? what’s wrong?

 

حنوفر كام يعني؟ مية جنيه؟ ميتين جنيه؟ مش معقول

How much are we going to save? a hundred? 2 hundred? Unbelievable!

 

هو إنتو جايين تتعشو ولا جايين تقتصدوا؟

Are you going to have dinner? or save up?
