Marhaba! Did you know that Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had frequent contact with Muslims across the world and from distant places? I for one did not, and just recently learned about these earlier contacts and historical relationships! I also learned that some historians argue that contact between Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Muslims across the world preceded the arrival of Christians to Australia. Today I am sharing an excerpt from the article that taught me these new things. I came across this excellent and recently published news article on BBC Arabic. Similar to the intended purpose and content of comprehension exercises, this is a reading comprehension exercise. After presenting the article, I have some questions for you to answer, and I certainly hope that these comprehension exercises are helping you practice Arabic in a fun, easy, and beneficial way!!

Please take time to read the text and the questions thoroughly before you answer them. Needless to say, such Arabic comprehension exercises will help you improve and you will able to fluently read and understand different texts, phrases, and passages from a variety of sources. I will give you all some time to work on your answers and then I will post the answers to the questions. As I have mentioned in an earlier post, reading newspaper articles and reports in Arabic is one of the most important tips to learn this beautiful language.
عندما وصل الإسلام إلى أستراليا
تزايد عدد سكان أستراليا الأصليين الذين يعتنقون الإسلام.
يجهل الكثير من الأستراليين أن سكان البلاد الأصليين كانوا على اتصال مستمر بمسلمين أجانب قبل وصول المستعمرين المسيحيين إلى بلادهم.
ولايزال الإسلام إلى اليوم يجتذب بعضهم.
القوارب الصغيرة البيضاء والصفراء الراسية على صخور جزيرة أرهام، شمالي أستراليا، تروي لنا قصة مغايرة لتلك التي يعرفها أغلب الأستراليين عن أمتهم.
إنها قوارب أندونيسية تقليدية معروفة باسم براوس، كانت تحمل الصيادين المسلمين من مدينة ماكاسار المزدهرة بحثا عن سمك خيار البحر.
ولا يعرف بالتحديد متى جاء الصيادون لأول مرة من ماكاسار.
يعتقد بعض المؤرخين أنهم وصلوا أستراليا عام 1750، ولكن التأريخ باستخدام الكربون المشع لشمع النحل في رسومات الكهوف يشير إلى فترة تاريخية أسبق بكثير.
ويبدو أن بعض الرسومات أنجزت قبل 1664، وربما تعود إلى أعوام 1500.
ويرجح أنهم كانوا يقومون برحلة كل عام لجمع خيار البحر، المرتفع الثمن، نظرا لأهميته في طرق العلاج والأطعمة الصينية.
سكان أستراليا كانوا يقدمون هدايا للصيادين الأندونيسيين لتوديعهم.
ويرى عالم الأثروبوليجا، جون برادلي، من جامعة ميلبورن، أن التواصل مع سكان ماكاسار هي أول محاولة من الأستراليين لإقامة علاقات مع الخارج.
ويضيف أن المحاولة كانت ناجحة، لأنهم عقدوا صفقات ومعاملات تجارية، على أساس المساواة دون مشاكل عرقية.
ولكن بريطانيا تعاملت بشكل مناقض. فقد اعتبر البريطانيون أستراليا أرضا بلا سكان، ولذلك استوطنوها بلا اتفاقية، أو أي اعتراف بحق السكان الأصليين في أرضهم.
وقد استقر بعض الصيادين من أهل ماكاسار بأستراليا وتزوجوا من أستراليات، وتركوا إرثا دينيا وثقافيا عمّر طويلا في أستراليا.
وفضلا عن رسومات الكهوف وغيرها من فنون السكان الأصليين، تأثرت الميثولوجيا الأسترالية بالمعتقدات الإسلامية.
ويقول برادلي: “إذا ذهبت إلى جنوب شرقي أرهام ستجد هناك أثرا للإسلام في الأغاني وفي الرسومات وفي الرقص وفي طقوس الجنائز أيضا”.
ويضيف: ” من الواضح تماما أنها طقوس مستعارة، إلى جانب بعض الكلمات والتعابير اللغوية، إذ تسمع منهم تمجيدا لله، أو بعض الصلوات يؤدونها لله
