The Olympic Games (奥运会 ào yùn huì) are the world’s biggest celebration of sport. More than 200 nations participate in the foremost international sporting event. For a couple of weeks, people from all over the world engage together in fair competitions and athletic skills. The international festival aims to promote solidarity and respect, and to rejoice over our shared humanity.

Thousands of athletes compete in the Olympic Games. 11,238 athletes from 207 countries, for example, participated in the Summer Olympic Games held in Rio in 2016. But the Olympic delegations consist not only of athletes, but of trainers, doctors, and managers as well. And they all followed by journalists, politicians, tourists, and massive audience. The host city (主办城市 zhǔ bàn chéng shì) streets are usually flooded with huge numbers of people, all celebrating the international sporting festival.

Host cities have traditionally been chosen by the International Olympic Committee (国际奥委会 guó jì ào wěi huì) members who vote seven years before the Games. The Olympic Games take place over 16 days, but the event requires years of preparation. Following years of planning and organizing, new venues and stadiums are established, transportation systems are added and improved, residence halls are built, and intense security arrangements are introduced.

In 2013, the committee awarded Tokyo (东京 Dōngjīng), Japan the honor to serve as the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Japan soon started to get ready for the coming Games.

On March 20, 2020, the Olympic Flame (奥运火种 ào yùn huǒ zhòng) arrived in Japan. Four days later, and only four months before the Olympic Games were originally scheduled to take place, an unprecedented decision was made. As the coronavirus invaded every corner of the globe, capsizing daily life, and the world grappled with its impact, the International Olympic Committee announced (宣布 xuān bù) a postponement. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the Olympic Games were postponed (推迟 tuī chí), for the first time in their history.

In the present circumstances, the International Olympic Committee President, and the Prime Minister (首相 shǒu xiàng) of Japan have concluded that the Games in Tokyo must be rescheduled (改期 gǎi qī). The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 were to be postponed by a year, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community. It was agreed that the Olympic flame will stay in Japan, and  that the Games will keep the name (名称 míng chēng) Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
