Beginner’s Dutch: Letter, Woord, Zin, Getal, Cijfer Posted by on Feb 23, 2012 in Dutch Grammar, Dutch Language, Dutch Vocabulary

Quite often the Dutch Facebook group has a few posts from people wanting to learn Dutch. So, to help them out a bit, I thought we could cover some of the basics in some beginner’s Dutch posts. If you are a bit further along with your Dutch learning, why not use the opportunity to review how far you have come.

Let’s start by looking at the difference between letters (letters), woorden (words) and zinnen (sentences). For many of the Dutch words I haven’t provided their English translation. See if you can figure out what they mean from the context or by looking them up in a woordenboek (dictionary).

a, A = letter

koe (cow) = woord

Een woord bestaat uit letters.

Het Nederlandse alfabet heeft 26 letters.

Ik heet Jochem. = zin

Een zin bestaat uit woorden.

Ik heet Jochem.

I and J = hoofdletters

. = punt

And now let’s take a look at getallen and cijfers .

0 – nul

1 – een

2 – twee

3 – drie

4 – vier

5 – vijf

6 – zes

7 – zeven

8 – acht

9 – negen

Een getal bestaat uit cijfers (b.v. 48573).

Here are some oefeningen (exercises) for you:
