Hello, everyone! The weekend is coming up, have you made any plans? Either way, many people enjoy spending their free time trying out new recipes in the kitchen. The fall season is specially inviting for culinary adventures, with the weather cooling down and the colors outside being so inspiring. And one cannot think about the fall without immediately connecting it with a seasonal favorite: pumpkins.

This round orange vegetable is not just used for decorating homes for Halloween, it is also a key ingredient is North American cuisine around this time of the year. Featured in every respectable Thanksgiving feast, the pumpkin pie is a compulsory classic.

But today we are moving beyond that to learn a treat that has enjoyed its fair share of sucess worldwide: the pumpkin spice latte. But first of all, what is that?

What is the pumpkin spice latte all about?

It is said that the coffee-milk-pumpkin-based drink rose to stardom in the USA after being launched by the coffee shop chain Starbucks in 2013. I have been in Europe for a while and I have noticed Pumpkin Spice Latte’s gradual increase in popularity on a yearly basis. Originally a Starbucks exclusive around here, I could see that many local cafés have jumped on the Pumpkin Spice bandwagon over time, now widely available in many cities.

What is Up With Pumpkin Spice?

Our goal here is a little different: how about making your very own Pumpkin Spice Latte? Have you tried before? It is a great way to start a lazy Sunday morning and indulge in new flavors and sensations while also staying warm and cosy. Of course, I should also add that it is super simple, easy and inexpensive to make at home (let’s face it, way cheaper than getting it from certain aforementioned coffee shops). So let’s get into the fall spirit?

What you’ll need

  • 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon honey
  • 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon  vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream, for serving

Instructions

  • Add in all of your ingredients to a saucepan.
  • Stir and bring them to a simmer.
  • Take the saucepan off the heat and pour into a large mug.
  • Decorate with whipped cream and sprinkles come spices on top. Enjoy!.

*For the pumpkin puree, you can easily roast some pumpkin slices in the oven and then process it in a mixer until smooth.

*For a vegan version, all you have to do is replace the milk for a vegetable variety. Almond milk works perfectly.

*Whipped cream is optional, but it certainly adds to the overall charm.
