Hello, my people!

Since mid-June, the whole world has been tuning in to keep up with the 2018 World Cup in Russia! How about you? So how about we take this opportunity to learn some soccer vocabulary. This way, you will be prepared for the upcoming games, root for your country or just watch the games to practice! Let’s score!

stadium

The building with an open area where the game takes place:

  • The Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow is the biggest in the country.

jersey 

The shirt worn by the team members:

  • When the player scored a goal, he kissed his jersey and waved at the crowd.

first half 

second half 

Respectively, the first and second part of a soccer match:

  • The team was off its game during first half, but picked up its pace over second half.

field 

The grass area used to play sports:

  • The player was red-carded and had to leave the field.

coach

The person who trains the sports team:

The points you score in soccer:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals on his last game.

goalposts

The structure inside which players must kick the ball to score a goal:

  • The ball hit the posts and bounced back.

win

To get the most goals in a game:

  • If Brazil wins this Cup, it is going to be a six-time winner.

stands

The row of seats where people sit to watch the game:

  • The stands were swarming with fans from all over the country.

The action of hitting the ball towards one direction.

The person supposed to stop the ball from crossing the goalposts.

save

The act of keeping the ball away from the goalposts:

  • Salah miskicked and the goalkeeper was able to save.

foul

To act against the rules in soccer:

  • The referee called a foul when the ball touched the player’s hand.

yellow card

A small yellow card handed to a player when he breaks soccer rules to warn him:

  • Beckhan needs to be careful because he was already handed a yellow card.

red card

A small red card handed to a player when he breaks soccer rules and must leave the field.

opponent

  • After knocking down an opponent, the player was handed a red card.

scoreboard

A large board that shows the score of a game:

  • I missed the beginning of the game, what is the score?
