Summertime Outdoor Movies Posted by on Aug 15, 2012 in Culture

Watching outdoor movies in the summer is a great way to spend a night!  The first place that might come to mind when you think about seeing an outdoor movie is a drive-in theater.  A drive-in theater is an outdoor movie theater that people drive their cars to and then sit in their cars to watch a movie projected on a large white screen.  This type of theater was much more popular about a generation ago, as compared to now.  Today many of the old drive-in theaters that were once popular have fallen into disrepair and are no longer used.  There are other places to see outdoor movies in the summer though, especially in larger cities where temporary movie screens are erected or in places where movies can be projected onto the wall of a building.  Parks are a very common venues for summer outdoor movies, but there are other places that host outdoor screenings like rooftops, closed off streets, and even cemeteries!  In Los Angeles there is a summertime outdoor movie festival in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery (you can read more about this here: http://www.hollywoodforever.com/culture).

Tonight I am going to see an outdoor movie that is project on a wall in an outdoor shopping center.  The movie that is being shown is Ghost Busters.  It is very common for free outdoor movie screenings, like the one I am going to, to show old movies, like Ghost Busters.  It is not that common for an outdoor movie showing to present a new movie, that is also being sown in theaters.

To give you a better idea of what you can do and what you can expect at summertime outdoor movie showing in the United States, here is the basic information that is published for a movie night in a park near my home.

1. Movies are family-friendly and free.

2. You are allowed to bring picnic dinners and drinks. Alcohol is permitted.

3. There is free parking on park grounds.

4. Bring pillows and blankets to get comfortable.

5. No tall chairs.

6. No dogs.

7. No barbecues.

I hope you are able to enjoy a movie outdoors sometime this summer!
