Maybe this will sound like somewhat of a rhetorical question to some of you, but laquelle des deux versions préférez-vous (which one of the two versions do you prefer): The Jacques Brel or the David Bowie version?

Of course, Jacques Brel is far from being un étranger (a stranger) to The French Blog!

But did you know that he was actually a *Belgian* artist?

Most people, till today, tend to mistake him for a Frenchman.

That, if anything, highlights how much of a profound an impact he left on la chanson française.

His name is Jacques Brel, and contrary to many other singers and musicians, he is one whose artistic life “se passe de tout de commentaire” (does not require any comment), for he is famous to have once said:

"In our lives, there are two important dates:  Our birth and our death. Everything we do in between is not very important..."

Now, écoutons sa chanson (let’s listen to his song):

Now compare it to David Bowie’s cover, of the same song of course, simply translated as “In the Port of Amsterdam“:

Yeah, they’ve bargained their virtue, their goodness all gone
For a few dirty coins, well, he just can’t go on
Throws his nose to the sky and he aims it up above
And he pisses like I cry on the unfaithful love

    Fun! Moi, je suis equally Brelophile and Bowiephile, mais this one’s facile: c’est Brel. Cependant, Brel’s version of Ziggy Stardust n’est pas terrible…

    Jacques Brel. I learned of him through other chanteurs who sang his chansons which eventually lead me to him!

    Jacques Brel, definitely. I was shocked that the English version was chosen for the ending of Quebecer movie “Amsterdam” (French language movie) released in Sptember 2013. The movie is most excellent though.

    The best is Jacques Brel’s Amsertdam – I think it’s more intense with Brel.
